BUTCHEL, Ohio (WOUB) –  The Trimble Tomcats went over the hill to take on the Nelsonville-York Buckeyes. The Tomcats came out with the win in overtime, 41-39.

The Buckeyes started the game hot and strongly controlled the first quarter. Senior Alayna Okulich rallied her team by getting a big steal to pick up the early lead, 10-7.

The second quarter was similar to the first, with Nelsonville overwhelming the Tomcats with their defensive play. Both teams however, experienced a period of back and forth fouls, giving each other crucial moments to score but not being able to capitalize with a multitude of missed shots. Freshman Cam Jolley made a buzzer beater three, adding to the buckeyes’ lead before heading into the locker room, 19-13.

Coming out for the second half, Trimble took a turnaround  with their energy and play. The duo of Abby Weber and McKenzie Eing went on a hot streak, where they brought the aggression to keep themselves in the game. Eing racked up the most points she had all day in the third quarter with 6 which helped Trimble end a quarter with a lead for the first time all game, 26-25.

The Buckeyes were not going down without a fight though, because right out the gate in the fourth quarter, Jolley and Sophomore Madi Pidcock who both picked up a three for themselves, with Senior Megan Booth who came in clutch with two crucial rebounds to put her teammates into scoring position. Trimble extended their chance however by having their best defensive performance all game to tie it up at 34-34 to take the game into overtime.

With it being neck and neck Trimble looked to have one thing on their minds, absolutely no fouls. Despite that, Nelsonville was able to draw two fouls on Okulich and Pidcock to give them a chance of gaining a crucial lead, but only hurt themselves by missing four free throws. Capitalizing off this mistake and down 39-38, Weber made the shot the Tomcats needed with a spectacular three with less than a minute to go, 41-39. Looking to drain the clock, Trimble tried to keep the ball out of Nelsonville’s hands but Okulich made a remarkable steal and Head Coach Mark Truax called a timeout with a second left on the clock to give the Buckeyes a chance to seal the deal. Once the ball got passed in bounds, Booth looked to make a shot but got caught in traffic with time expiring, giving the win to Trimble, finishing with the same score of 41-39.

The victory moved Trimbles  in-conference record to 3-3. The Tomcats are set to face off next week against Wellston.
