ASHTON, WV. (WOUB) – The Meigs Marauders (1-11) traveled to Ashton on Tuesday hoping to pick up their first win of the season against the Hannan Wildcats (1-8), where they would win 46-28.

The first quarter started off hot for Hannan, opening up quickly to a 5 to 0 run. Scoring would stall for the Wildcats and remain sluggish for most of the quarter, before Meigs would begin to come back. They would take the lead with a little over two minutes remaining thanks to a steal and score by Shelby Yost. The score would be 10-7 Marauders after the first quarter, with Hannan’s Delia Gibson posting 8 rebounds alone.

The second quarter would see Meigs continue their momentum, going up 16-9 after a three by Taylor Johnson. Wildcats’ Nikki Edmonds would hit a three to cut the Meigs lead to 18-16 later on, but with a last-second bucket by Shelby Yost, Meigs would finish the half up 24-16.

The second half would see the same struggles for Hannan. Turnovers would plague the Wildcats and while they significantly outrebounded the Marauders, they would struggle to regain ground. Hannan would fall behind 35-19 in the third quarter, but thanks to a three and a last-second score by Emma Wilson, they would head into the fourth quarter down 37-24.

Despite their efforts, the deficit would be too much to overcome in the fourth quarter, as Meigs would go on to pick up their first win of the season, 46-28.

Hannan dominated the rebounding game, but Meigs’ ability to force turnovers and find space was too much for the Wildcats. Marauders Freshman Taylor Johnson shined in the win, posting 13 points and 11 rebounds. Hannan’s Delia Johnson put up a strong game of her own, with 6 points and 20 rebounds in the loss.

Coach Heath Hudson is proud of the work the team has done, and believes this win is well deserved. “They’ve been working really hard. It’s good to get rewarded for that hard work,” Hudson said, “So, I’m very proud of them. Kept their composure. Ran plays. A lot of improvement on everything that we’ve been doing.”

The Meigs Marauders improve to 1-11 on the season and will travel to face the Eastern Eagles (1-11, 0-6) tomorrow. The Hannan Wildcats fall to 1-8 and will host Ohio Valley Christian (2-1) next Tuesday.
