STEWART, Ohio (WOUB) – Federal Hocking was able to grab their third win of the season on Tuesday night as they hosted River Valley and took down the Raiders by a final of 59-54.
The frigid temperatures across southeast Ohio would not stop this game getting played, with both teams being eager to set the tone early and establish a rhythm.
Fed Hock got out of the gates fast, with juniors Dillion Haynes and Mosiah Cottrill leading the way. Alongside them was freshman Wren Ballew, who continues to have a stellar rookie year at the varsity level. The Lancers were able to control the tempo for the majority of the first quarter, seeing them have the advantage 16-8 at the end of one.
River Valley was able to get right back into the game. A strong second quarter saw the Lancers only have a two-point lead going into the halftime break, 30-28 Fed Hock. “Our second quarter. The second quarter is horrible every game. We just have to fix that, and we should be good,” said Haynes after the game, talking about what to fix in games going forward.
The third quarter saw more of the same, a tight contest where you couldn’t decide who was going to take it, 42-39 Lancers after three.
In the fourth is where it all went down. Fed Hock was able to establish a lead late in the fourth quarter, but the Raiders brought it back with only a few minutes to go. In steps Mosiah Cottrill, who hit a huge three to change the momentum of the game. “It felt really good. It was a big momentum shift, and we really needed it because they ended up coming down and hitting two threes to tie the game again. I was glad my teammates were able to get me in that position.”
The Lancers were able to seal the deal after that three. With some clutch buckets from Cam Joy and huge free throws by Haynes, the Lancers picked up their third win on the season. Haynes led the team with 15 points on the night. Joy, Ballew, and Cottrill all had ten of their own in the win.
Federal Hocking Head Coach Jonathan Thompson talked more about what this win meant postgame. “The boys have battled. We’ve had a rough year so far starting out. We’ve been in a lot of ball games where it seems we can’t continue to play for four quarters to be able to get that win. Tonight, I think we did a better job of that. Obviously, we had our let downs and stuff along that line, but for the most part, it’s exciting to get a win and hopefully we can keep the ball rolling in the right direction.”
