POMEROY, Ohio (WOUB) — No team has exceeded expectations this season like Vinton County (11-6, 4-4 TVC-Ohio). After dropping back-to-back games against Alexander and Athens, respectively, the Lady Vikings needed to get back on track. They did that, and more, against Meigs (1-12, 0-8 TVC-Ohio), as they rode an impressive defensive effort to a 44-12 road victory.
Vinton County’s defense was as good as it has been all season Thursday night, as Meigs’ 12 points were the fewest the Lady Vikings have allowed all season. Meigs scored just three points in the first half and just one field goal. Vinton County put up 18 points of its own in the first half but was a little rusty coming off Wednesday night’s loss to Athens.
“I thought we did a good job tonight. We missed shots because we were pretty tired,” head coach Brett Jones said. “It was just that simple. But defensively, we stayed engaged. Multiple people were scoring, multiple people got involved in the action.”
Despite the fatigue setting in for Vinton County, its intensity increased throughout the game, especially from the bench.
“I feel when we play our best, our bench plays extremely well. They come out confident, they come out energized, they come out engaged,” Jones said. “I think when your bench plays well, that’s just extra.”
Up next for Vinton County is River Valley, a team that’s equally as intense. For Jones, it’s not just about matching the Raiders’ intensity but exceeding it.
“they’re going to press. We understand. They’re going to press, they’re going to run, they’re going to get aggressive,” Jones said. “We have to match their energy and, in my opinion, exceed their energy, and we’ll be there. I really feel that.”
