WELLSTON, Ohio (WOUB) — The Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes came down to Wellston High School on Monday night for another crucial conference game. Nelsonville-York ended up taking this one, by a score of 69-39.

The start was owned by Sophomore Madi Pidcock. The guard scored 15 for Nelsonville-York in just the first quarter, and they led 26-12 by the end of it. The Lady Buckeyes also made an impressive five three-pointers in just the first quarter.

Pidcock was such a key factor to get Nelsonville-York moving early on, and she accredited this success to her support system.

“It’s really my teammates, they support me… and so does my Coach Truax, he tells me to shoot,” said Pidcock.

Nelsonville-York found a lot of their success off trap plays on defense. Wellston didn’t have trouble creating second-chances, but Nelsonville-York made it a challenge for the Golden Rockets to move the ball on offense. This allowed for plenty of fast break opportunities on the other end for the Lady Buckeyes.

Wellston picked up some slack in the second, but the Lady Buckeyes kept their foot on the gas. The score at the end of the first half was 37-26 Nelsonville-York. The Lady Buckeyes were in control still, but the Golden Rockets were trying to make it interesting in this stage of the game.

The second half was slow, as Nelsonville-York held Wellston to just three points the entire third quarter. Fouls were being drawn at a high-rate, and the flow of the game was completely disrupted. The Lady Buckeyes, on the other hand, scored at a steady pace from the charity stripe, which allowed for an expanded 53-29 lead heading into the fourth.

Toward the end, Okulich kept things moving, and Nelsonville-York was able to put the backups into the game with a few minutes remaining. She ended the night with 29 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, and 5 steals.

The Lady Buckeyes picked up another much-needed conference win, moving to (4-5) in conference play, which keeps them at 5th in the TVC-Ohio, with a chance of jumping Vinton County (4-4) in the coming weeks. As for Wellston, the Golden Rockets move to (1-7) in conference play, and hope to bounce back at Gallia Academy on Tuesday night.
