Jazz Excursions with Dr. Art Cromwell: Some Other Stuff: The Voice of Grachan Moncur III
One of the few, yet prominent trombonist of the Avant Garde’s New Wave was Grachan Moncur, who contributed a uniquely open approach to both his compositions and the improvisatory style on his instrument. Born in NYC raised in Newark, Grachan’s musical heritage can be traced through his bassist father Grachan II, who played in the famous Savoy Sultans. Grachan’s own work included Ray Charles, the Jazzet, most importantly stints in the newer developing styles of groups led by Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, and Archie Shepp.
Join Excursions on Sat. May, 31 for a pre-birthday celebration with words and music by Grachan Moncur, from 6:06-9:00 p.m. EDT, as part of Radio Free Athens, on WOUB Ohio University public radio.
