AKRON, Ohio (WOUB) – Despite holding the lead going into the final inning, Ohio Softball falls to Western Michigan in a heartbreaker, 7-6.
After defeating Northern Illinois on Friday, the Bobcats were looking to keep the momentum going. They were set to take on Western Michigan in the first game on Saturday.
The winner got Akron in the tournament finals. Whoever won would need to beat the Zips twice to be crowned the champion.
Belle Hummel continued her hot streak at the plate in the first inning. She tripled and scored on a Brenna Farmer RBI groundout a batter later.
Western Michigan responded in the top half of the second inning, scoring their second run on a Hannah Herman RBI double. The game would be tied at two after Sydney Young homered for the Bobcats.
Ohio’s bats woke up in the fourth, scoring three runs and giving them a three-run lead. Even after the Broncos responded with two runs in the third, Ohio held a two-run lead heading into the final inning.
Skipp Miller had gone six strong innings for Ohio. She got one out in the seventh before she was pulled for Keegan Moore. Eventually, two runners would find their way on base for Western Michigan, and they capitalized.
Caitlin Tighe delivered a two-RBI double to tie up the game. She scored on a pass ball to give her team the lead.
That would be all the Broncos needed as they went on to win 7-6 after shutting Ohio down in the final inning.
The Bobcats had seven hits on the day, two extra-base hits from Hummel and Young.
Skipp Miller went the full seven innings after coming back in relief. She had eight strikeouts.
Western Michigan went on to lose to Akron right after 3-1, meaning Akron was the conference champion.
Ohio ends its season with a 38-20 record.
