Tornadoes pick up their first victory over Lancers in five years
< < Back toRacine, OH (WOUB) – The Federal Hocking Lancers picked up their second loss of the season against the Southern Tornadoes.
The Lancers came off a loss against the Southeastern Panthers, losing 59-42. The Tornadoes were seeking redemption after falling to River Valley 61-54.
Southern started with that ball and was looking to establish themselves in the paint, but some key stops from the Lancers kept the score close.
Federal Hocking’s Cam Joy started off hot, hitting most of his first shots and keeping the score close; however, they couldn’t spread the ball, leading to them falling into a deficit.
The tornadoes took a strong 20-point lead in the second quarter by cleaning up their mistakes. They flew to the ball, collecting offensive rebounds and scoring second-chance points.
Southern also exploited the Lancer’s timid passing, forcing several turnovers. In turn, it made them even more timid. This showed when the team ended the game with four total assists.
Federal Hocking needed to mount a comeback in the second half, but the tornadoes came out on fire. They went on a scoring run and got several consecutive steals, deflating the hopes of the Lancers.
As the game progressed, it got more and more physical. Federal hocking racked up 13 fouls. This, however, did not drastically impact the game because neither team was necessarily efficient at the line.
At the end of the third quarter, the Lancers found more of a rhythm offensively. This was mainly because they put themselves in better positions to get rebounds. Joy even ended with a double-double with points and rebounds.
The writing was on the wall by the fourth quarter, and the lead was too large to overcome. While Federal hocking had some bright spots, they could not consistently score points, while the tornadoes could almost score at will. The Lancers fell to Southern 73-47.
The Tornadoes will stay home to defend their court against the Clay Panthers on Saturday.
Federal Hocking will return home and try to put the pieces together to find their first win against Athens on Tuesday.
