The Ohio University School of Music is hosting the 2013 Athens Jazz Festival this Friday through Sunday, featuring OU jazz ensembles, student ensembles from area high schools and guest artists Rob Parton (trumpet) and Bob Thompson (piano).

Rob Parton is highly regarded as a studio, theater and jazz musician, performer, educator and bandleader. His recorded and live work includes stints with Tony Bennett, Mel Torme, The Beach Boys, Celine Dion and many others.

The Ohio University School of Music will present the annual Opera Theater Scenes concert this Friday, April 12, featuring a variety of operatic highlights and scenes from lyric theater.

Titled "Songs of Travelers," the performance will take place at the Ridges Auditorium at 7:30 p.m.

Operatic highlights from Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci and Massenet’s Cendrillon will share the evening with lilting melodies from Kreiger’s Side Show and Weill’s Street Scene, among many others.

This weekend The Union Bar & Grill will host the 18th annual Blackoutfest, a yearly celebration of underground punk/garage music, presented by Athens' own Blackout Booking.

"It's a weekend that's jam-packed with some great rock and roll music and awesome Athens bands, too. It’s always been that way," said Brian Koscho, who will play a set Friday night with his new band Unmonumental.

Ohio University-Chillicothe will present "Seasons of Marriage with the Shuffles," featuring internationally-acclaimed theatrical and vocal duo John and Nancy Shuffle, at 8 p.m. on April 12 in the Bennett Hall Auditorium.

Further, the Ohio University Alumni Association is hosting a reception for alumni and friends of Ohio University-Chillicothe at 6 p.m. in Bennett Hall, room 130-131.  The event will allow graduates and friends to renew acquaintances and meet new Bobcats.

Alt-rock chanteuse Cat Power will join fellow headliners Wilco, John Prine and Gogol Bordello at the 9th annual Nelsonville Music Festival, being held May 30-June 2 at Hocking College.

The fourth round of lineup announcements, announced this afternoon by Stuart's Opera House, includes 15 other national, regional and local acts: Alt-country singer-songwriter Tift Merrit; Brooklyn's Shilpa Ray; Nelsonville Fest alumni The Honeycutters; guitar virtuoso William Tyler; folk singer Catherine MacLellan; and West Virginia musician Todd Burge.
