SUMMARY:KENNEDY MUSEUM: Carrie Mae Weems: The Usual Suspects Reception
DESCRIPTION:Carrie Mae Weems: The Usual Suspects \nJanuary 11\, 2019 – March 31\, 2019 \nReception: January 24\, 6-7:30 PM \nOn January 11\, Kennedy Museum of Art will open Carrie Mae Weems: The Usual Suspects. The exhibition includes recent photographic and video works questioning stereotypes that associate black bodies with criminality. Comprised of three associated works\, All the Boys and The Usual Suspects  examine the racial stereotypes at the heart of deaths of black men and women at the hands of police\, and confronts the viewer with the fact of judicial inaction. The third piece\,  People of a Darker Hue \,  is a   meditative compilation of video\, found footage\, narration\, and performance commemorating these deaths. \nConsidered one of the most influential contemporary American artists\, Carrie Mae Weems has investigated family relationships\, cultural identity\, sexism\, class\, political systems and the consequences of power. Determined as ever to enter the picture— both literally and metaphorically—she has sustained an on-going dialogue within contemporary discourse for over thirty years. During this time Carrie Mae Weems has developed a complex body of art employing photographs\, text\, fabric\, audio\, digital images\, installation\, and video. \n  \nGallery Hours \nM\, T\, W\, F: 10am – 5pm \nTh: 10am – 8pm \nSat. SUMMARY:Crumb Coat- Cake Art Reception
DESCRIPTION:My name is Luke Boyd. I am an art grad student studying painting and drawing at Ohio University. I wanted to let you know about a show I have coming up on Friday\, January 25th 7-9pm. The show includes several of my paintings from the last few months. The majority of the paintings depict cakes. \nThe show is titled Crumb Coat \nCrumb Coat: The thin layer of frosting that traps stray cake crumbs and prevents them from popping up in your finished cake. \nI am so excited to have my paintings on display at ArtsWest for the month of January. \nThese paintings are recalling\, preserving and embellishing sweet memories. These desserts are representative of the events\, people\, and time for which they were created. They are nostalgic. I am remembering the recipes\, processes\, and people who I associate with each confection as I paint them from memory. \nPlease join me on Friday\, Jan 25th from 7:00-9:00pm for cake\, beverages and MORE CAKE at ArtsWest.

SUMMARY:ART + DESIGN: 2\, 3\, 4: Dimensional Photographies Continues
DESCRIPTION:2\, 3\, 4: Dimensional Photographies \nAn exhibition in the Ohio University Art Gallery\, January 22-March 2\, 2019. \nMonday\, Jan. 28 – Lecture by juror: Brittany Nelson\, Seigfred 401\, 6pm \nThursday\, Feb. 28 – closing Reception\, 5-7PM \nContemporary photography is embracing modes of production that move the print off the wall and into 3-D and 4-D realms\, exemplified in part by a return to historical processes. Photography like this distinguishes itself from retinal\, transmittable media by calling attention to its own materiality\, its presence\, its singularity and its unique identity as both image and object. \nView Full Schedule: \nhttps://calendar.ohio.edu/site/finearts/event/art–design-2-3-4-dimensional-photographies-exhibition/

SUMMARY:Presentation By Photographer Monica Stevenson
DESCRIPTION:Lecture followed by question & answer time from Monica Stevenson in Schoonover 145\, from 7-9pm. Open to the public. Free admission. \n___________________________ \n\n\n\nThe School of Visual Communication proudly presents the fine art photography of Viscom alumnus Monica Stevenson. \nMonica Stevenson is a photographer with an unbridled affinity for capturing the equine tradition. Her memorable images reflect a singular vision and creativity that transcends print; bringing to life the energy felt in the barn\, the field\, and the arena. Her seasoned approach to lighting and artful compositions engender a technically sound dynamic to images that reflect both the enduring romance of equestrian heritage and a creative\, modern curiosity. Stevenson is anything but green in her approach to capturing the cadence of the horse or the accoutrements of its rider. \nStevenson’s new work is an exploration of the tactile and uncannily artistic array of visual details that materialize if one looks and “sees” in a particular way. The oft- overlooked dance of water and froth\, the chaotic tumble of colliding horses\, the convolutions of exercised flesh\, and the sculptural experiments with hair and metal—all these combine to make a collection of photographs that celebrates the delightfully sensory nature of the equine world which we have chosen to inhabit. \nWhat sets Stevenson apart from her industry counterparts is her refined technical prowess. Stevenson – who has made a name for herself as an award-winning luxury still life photographer and motion director– takes an expert approach to her media and surroundings; capturing the strength of the horse in an array of lighting situations\, using medium format film to the most advanced digital technology. Her versatility is evident in images that range from the soft and painterly to those staged with purposeful repose. \nStevenson’s passion for the equestrian culture has taken her around the world–Her collection includes images from Abu Dhabi\, St. Moritz\, Montreal\, Argentina\, California\, Mexico\, France\, and USA.
