She notes\, ” I am looking forward to experimenting making paper during my residency that will allow me to try new techniques to build into my printmaking practice.” \n“We’re very excited and honored to have an artist of Jennifer’s stature spending time at our studio\,” says Paper Circle executive director\, Barbara Ery. Ery was introduced to the artist by last year’s artist-resident\, Delita Martin. \nMack has been a professional artist for over 20 years\, starting in 2002 with her degree from Morris Brown College in Atlanta. DESCRIPTION:  \nNELSONVILLE\, OHIO\, MAY 22\, 2022 \nDuring the week of June 4-11\, 2022\, Paper Circle in Nelsonville\, Ohio\, will be hosting the nationally known printer and multimedia artist\, Jennifer Mack-Watkins\, for a paper making residency. \nMs. Mack\, who is based in central New Jersey\, works as a full-time artist in her Brooklyn NY studio. While in Nelsonville\, she will be learning the craft of paper making at Paper Circle\, whose mission is to educate the public about the creation of handmade paper. She has done a residency in Japan (2015) and received a grant from the Joan Mitchell Foundation\, also in 2015. Ms. Mack has had her work included in curated exhibitions in NYC\, Queens and Brooklyn\, NY: East Orange\, NJ; Hampton\, VA; Miami\, FL; Philadelphia\, PA; and Atlanta\, GA. Ms. Mack’s work explores societal conformities that isolates individuals to be confined to fit into a space. This space includes the complexities of being a woman\, beauty images\, relationships\, body image\, power\, and gender roles. Images of Ms. Mack’s can be seen at http://www.mackjennifer.com/ \nThis engagement is supported by the Arts Midwest GIG Fund\, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. \nAn open studio will be held on June 8th from noon to 1pm. On June 10th\, there will be an exhibit and artist talk from 5 to 7pm. At the request of the artist\, masks and proof of vaccination will be required for entry to the studio. \nPaper Circle is a non-profit studio and gallery located at 35 W. SUMMARY:LIVING YEARS: Conversation With The Director
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us Tuesday\, August 30th at 7pm for a conversation with the director of Living Years\, Brenda Williams Gillis\, who made a documentary about her father’s life as a quadriplegic. Admission is free. \nAbout the Film \nSeptember 8th\, 1956\, Highway 395\, 33 miles north of Bishop\, 4:15am.\, Gale Williams fell asleep at the wheel. \nOn the eve of his 18th birthday\, he crashed his car in a remote area of California and became a quadriplegic. \n\n\nIn those days people with such severe injuries were only expected to live 10-15 years. To survive\, mentally and physically\, Gale set his mind to tackling small goals\, focusing only on what he was able to do\, and through a supportive family and church community\, he rebuilt his life. \nAt 82\, and most likely the longest living quadriplegic\, Gale’s life story shows us that there are no limitations to what we can accomplish if we set our minds to it. \n\n\nAbout the Director \nAt the age of 3 months old\, I was adopted by parents that were unable to have their own biological children. I grew up in Santa Monica\, California\, in a unique and loving environment with a father who was a quadriplegic\, which made my childhood very different than my peers. \nIn my 40’s I had the idea to make a documentary about my father’s remarkable life. Just before turning 50\, having no film experience\, I finally started\, and three years later my debut film\, Living Years has been completed. I currently live in Woodland Hills CA with my husband and 2 daughters.

SUMMARY:Fall Sustainability Series: REVOLUTION GENERATION
DESCRIPTION:Sustainability Series Theme: Get Involved \nAbout the film \nThe number of Millennials in the United States — those born between approximately 1978 and 2000 — is near 80 million people. SUMMARY:From the Hills and Hollers: COAL MINER’S DAUGHTER with Dr. Rachel Terman
DESCRIPTION:About the film \nLoretta Lynn was one of the first female superstars in country music and remains a defining presence within the genre; with her strong\, clear\, hard-country voice and tough\, no-nonsense songs about husbands who cheat and wives who weren’t about to be pushed around\, Lynn introduced a feminist mindset to Nashville years before the phrase “women’s liberation” became common currency. \n  \nAbout the series \nFollowing the success of the full capacity screening of our 50th anniversary of Appalshop’s STRANGER WITH A CAMERA screening in 2020\, the Athena Cinema and partners present an exciting new film series on Appalachian culture and depictions in film. \nThe mission of the series is to connect Athens and the university community to the surrounding region by examining the different ways Appalachia has been represented through film. We seek to develop cultural competency and humility by showing viewers the way both the assets and challenges the region faces have been viewed by those who have the power to represent it on screen. \nShort introduction/lectures will provide context for the film and introduce the underlying issues represented in film and other media. All events in the series are presented with free admission. \nThis series is sponsored by the 2023 Appalachian Studies Association Conference\, Ohio Honors Program\, Center for Campus and Community Engagement\, Multicultural Center\, Black Student Cultural Programming Board\, Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Program\, Athens County Public Libraries\, University Libraries\, Honors Tutorial College\, Center for Advising\, Career\, and Experiential Learning\, and OHIO Fellows.

SUMMARY:DIRTY DANCING: Fundraiser for Abortion Fund of Ohio
DESCRIPTION:Join us Thursday\, September 22nd at 7pm for a screening of DIRTY DANCING. This year marks the 35th anniversary of this timeless film\, and the storyline started a dialogue about women’s reproductive rights. Admission is $10 and will be donated to Abortion Fund of Ohio. \nAbout the Film \nBaby (Jennifer Grey) is one listless summer away from the Peace Corps. Hoping to enjoy her youth while it lasts\, she’s disappointed when her summer plans deposit her at a sleepy resort in the Catskills with her parents. Her luck turns around\, however\, when the resort’s dance instructor\, Johnny (Patrick Swayze)\, enlists Baby as his new partner\, and the two fall in love. Baby’s father forbids her from seeing Johnny\, but she’s determined to help him perform the last big dance of the summer. \nAbout Abortion Fund of Ohio \nAbortion Fund of Ohio (formerly Women Have Options (WHO/O)) is Ohio’s statewide abortion fund. Founded in 1992\, we are an organization dedicated to helping Ohioans afford their reproductive choices. We believe that everyone should be able to make their own reproductive decisions—and we work to make that a reality in Ohio. We are a founding member of the National Network of Abortion Funds\, which includes more than 100 abortion funds around the United States and overseas. \nWe provide financial assistance and practical support (transportation\, housing\, and more) to help patients afford contraception\, emergency contraception\, and abortion services. We distribute funds to clinics throughout Ohio. These clinics\, in turn\, use the funds to provide financial assistance to those in need. Since 1992\, Abortion Fund of Ohio has helped thousands pay for their reproductive choices. \nSponsored by \nOhio University Division of Diversity and Inclusion Women’s Center \nAthenian’s for Bodily Autonomy
