SUMMARY:The Actors Guild of Parkersburg 'Grease' auditions
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Rydell High’s senior class of 1959\, head “greaser” Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their “Summer Nights” as the Burger Palace Boys and Pink Ladies sing and dance their way through such songs as “Greased Lightnin’\,” “It’s Raining on Prom Night\,” and “Alone at the Drive-In Movie.” Grease recalls the music of Buddy Holly\, Little Richard\, and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation. An eight-year run on Broadway and two subsequent revivals\, along with innumerable school and community productions place Grease among the world’s most popular musicals. \nAuditions will be held at 6:00 PM at the Guild Rehearsal Hall at 724 Market Street. If necessary\, callbacks will be held on January 24 at 6:00 PM. \nAuditions will consist of readings from the script and song selections from the show (materials will be provided) and a brief dance audition (choreography will be taught). Audition materials are available on the guild’s website at https://www.actors-guild.com/grease.html. The Grease staff requests that no period specific clothes or costumes be worn to auditions. \nThose auditioning should be at least 16 years old. \n  \nThe cast includes: \nTHE BURGER PALACE BOYS: \nDANNY ZUKO: Male\, High School Teen (Range: tenor\, D4–B5). The anything-for-a-laugh stocky type of boy; a clown who enjoys winding people up\, he is full of mischief and is always dreaming up half-baked schemes and ideas. \nSONNY LATIERRI: Male\, High School Teen (Range: baritone\, G3–A5). A member of the Burger Palace Boys; funny Italian-American\, he is a braggart and wheeler-dealer who thinks he’s a real lady-killer \n  \nTHE PINK LADIES: \nBETTY RIZZO: Female\, High School Teen (Range: Alto A3–C5). SUMMARY:Chuck Stewart Homecoming: unseen and recently discovered works
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Feb. 2 Dr. Arthur Cromwell will present at the Athens Public Library about photographer and Ohio University graduate Chuck Stewart from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. \nChuck Stewart built a successful career as a much in demand photographer for over 6 decades. Chuck became a first call photographer\, eventually becoming synonymous with jazz and popular music production. In addition to his “official” duties as a military photographer Chuck began creating photo essays of the everyday life of soldiers. Perhaps his most significant assignment was joining the photo unit that chronicled world Cold War atomic tests. As Chuck entered the commercial photography scene\, he worked for national Black magazines such as Jet and Ebony and for major record labels. His work expanded over time to include the records of Latin musicians\, rock musicians\, and early hip-hop stars. \n  \nDr. Cromwell’s presentation will essentially be the outline of an exhibit of never-before-seen photographic selections curated from the Stewart Archives by CEO\, Kim Stewart and Dr. Cromwell. For the first time\, patrons will be able to appreciate the entire creative arc of Chuck’s oeuvre – from Tucson to Ohio University to the gradual unfolding of a signal creative arc which spanned the latter half of the 20th Century.

SUMMARY:From the Hills and Hollers: DELIVERANCE with Jack Wright
DESCRIPTION:About the film \nIntent on seeing the Cahulawassee River before it’s dammed and turned into a lake\, outdoor fanatic Lewis Medlock takes his friends on a canoeing trip they’ll never forget into the dangerous American back-country. \n  \nAbout the series \nFollowing the success of the full capacity screening of our 50th anniversary of Appalshop’s STRANGER WITH A CAMERA screening in 2020\, the Athena Cinema and partners present an exciting new film series on Appalachian culture and depictions in film. \nThe mission of the series is to connect Athens and the university community to the surrounding region by examining the different ways Appalachia has been represented through film. We seek to develop cultural competency and humility by showing viewers the way both the assets and challenges the region faces have been viewed by those who have the power to represent it on screen. \nShort introduction/lectures will provide context for the film and introduce the underlying issues represented in film and other media. All events in the series are presented with free admission. \nThis series is sponsored by the 2023 Appalachian Studies Association Conference\, Ohio Honors Program\, Center for Campus and Community Engagement\, Multicultural Center\, Black Student Cultural Programming Board\, Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Program\, Athens County Public Libraries\, University Libraries\, Honors Tutorial College\, Center for Advising\, Career\, and Experiential Learning\, and OHIO Fellows.
