SUMMARY:From the Hills and Hollers: DARK WATERS with Harry Deitzler
DESCRIPTION:About the film \nA tenacious attorney uncovers a dark secret that connects a growing number of unexplained deaths to one of the world’s largest corporations. While trying to expose the truth\, he soon finds himself risking his future\, his family and his own life. \n  \nAbout the speaker \nHarry Deitzler [is] a personal injury lawyer who worked with Bilott in his class-action suit against DuPont. According to The News Journal of Wilmington\, Delaware\, after the chemical company settled the suit\, Deitzler used the money to test everyone who had been in contact with the toxins in the water. Medical examinations found that exposure to the chemical was linked to multiple diseases like testicular and kidney cancer\, ulcerative colitis and thyroid disease. (Source: Hollywood Reporter) \n  \nAbout the series \nFollowing the success of the full capacity screening of our 50th anniversary of Appalshop’s STRANGER WITH A CAMERA screening in 2020\, the Athena Cinema and partners present an exciting new film series on Appalachian culture and depictions in film. \nThe mission of the series is to connect Athens and the university community to the surrounding region by examining the different ways Appalachia has been represented through film. We seek to develop cultural competency and humility by showing viewers the way both the assets and challenges the region faces have been viewed by those who have the power to represent it on screen. \nShort introduction/lectures will provide context for the film and introduce the underlying issues represented in film and other media. All events in the series are presented with free admission. \nThis series is sponsored by the 2023 Appalachian Studies Association Conference\, Ohio Honors Program\, Center for Campus and Community Engagement\, Multicultural Center\, Black Student Cultural Programming Board\, Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Program\, Athens County Public Libraries\, University Libraries\, Honors Tutorial College\, Center for Advising\, Career\, and Experiential Learning\, and OHIO Fellows.

Performances will be at 8 p.m. March 17\, 18\, 19\, and a sensory-friendly performance at 2 p.m. March 18. \nSummary: On the streets of Dublin\, two people (Guy and Girl) meet and bond over their shared love of music. As Girl encourages Guy to record and share his music\, their connection blossoms into an unexpected and complicated romance. “Once” is being presented for disabilities awareness month with a special emphasis on the Deaf community and culture by including two ASL interpreters as shadow interpreters to the actors. This way of interpreting has not been attempted in the areas before and it makes the show more fully accessible for the Deaf community. Arts West is taking inspiration from Deaf West Theatre\, all performances will feature American Sign Language interpretation as a prominent aspect of the show. The inclusion of the Deaf community and accessibility for all theatergoers is currently lacking in the area\, making this production a unique experience for all who attend. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe sensory-friendly performance (March 18\, 2 p.m.) will include altered lighting and sounds\, sensory and calming materials\, accessible restrooms\, and a pre-show presentation. A sensory-friendly show is an adapted performance to foster a more welcoming and comfortable arts experience for people with sensory-processing disorders\, developmental differences\, autism\, and others who struggle with the traditional audience set-up.
