DESCRIPTION:Logan High School will present the musical The Theory of Relativity at the Logan High School Theatre\, September 21 through 24.   Through a seemingly unrelated collection of songs\, scenes and monologues\, The Theory of Relativity introduces a compelling array of characters experiencing the joys and heartbreaks\, the liaisons and losses\, the inevitability and the wonder of human connection.  Songs include “I’m Allergic to Cats\,” “Relative Pitch\,” and “Nothing Without You.”  The musical includes several monologues as well. \nTickets are general admission and are available at https://app.247ticketsales.com/o/32.  Tickets can also be purchased at the door.  Tickets are $10 each\, and LHSD students are free.  Show times are 7:30pm on Thursday and Saturday (9/21 and 9/23)\, with a 2:00 matinee on Sunday (9/24).  There will be a student only matinee on Friday morning.

DESCRIPTION:As part of Ohio University’s Sustainability Film Series\, Athens ReThink Plastics is hosting the film\, “Microplastics Madness\,” on Wednesday\, Sept. 27\, at The Ridges Auditorium in Athens. Admission is free for the film\, which starts at 7 p.m. \n“Microplastics Madness” tells the “story of 56 fifth-graders from P.S. 15 in Red Hook\, Brooklyn (New York City)\, living on the frontline of the climate crisis – whose actions on plastic pollution morph into extraordinary leadership and scalable victories\,” according to the film description. \nDuring the Sept. 27 film event\, a raffle prize with several samples of reusable bags and other earth-friendly items will be awarded after a short panel discussion. The panel will feature local citizens and students engaged in activities addressing plastic pollution\, offering realistic examples on how to counter this challenging problem. Those who come early can enjoy free popcorn\, Village Bakery cookies\, and books for educators to use in their classroom\, all compliments of Athens ReThink Plastics and the Sierra Club. \nAthens ReThink Plastics is a local group concerned about the adverse health and environmental impacts of the production\, consumption and discarding of plastic products. Earlier this year\, the group successfully lobbied Athens City Council to adopt a ban on single-use plastics in the city. It goes into effect on Jan. 1\, 2024. \nOn select Wednesdays through Nov. 1\, a different film touching on the sustainability issue is being screened as part of the Sustainability Film Series. All of the films take place in the Ridges Auditorium\, 135 Ridges Circle\, on Ohio University’s Ridges Campus. DESCRIPTION:About the film \nAffable hillbillies Tucker and Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are mistaken for murderers by a group of preppy college students. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Tiffany Arnold is an assistant professor of instruction in the College of Health Sciences and Professions where she coordinates the Appalachian Studies Undergraduate and Graduate Certificate Programs. Additionally\, she teaches Public Health and Environmental Health courses focused on Appalachian studies. \nOne of Dr. Arnold’s interests is the way that the Appalachian region is portrayed in films and in the media\, and she draws upon this interest to help others think critically about their own perceptions of the region and\, most importantly\, where these ideas come from. She will be discussing the common ways Appalachian culture appears in horror films and how the film “Tucker and Dale vs. Evil” contributes to or counteracts that narrative. \nAbout the series \nFollowing the success of the 2022-23 series\, we are excited to present the 2nd annual From the Hills and Hollers: Appalachian Stories Film Series. \nThe mission of the series is to connect Athens and the university community to the surrounding region by examining the different ways Appalachia has been represented through film. We seek to develop cultural competency and humility by showing viewers the way both the assets and challenges the region faces have been viewed by those who have the power to represent it on screen. \nShort introduction/lectures will provide context for the film and introduce the underlying issues represented in film and other media. All events in the series are presented with free admission.  \nThis screening will take place at the Ridges Auditorium located at 135 Ridges Circle. \nThis series is sponsored by the 2023 Appalachian Studies Association Conference\, Ohio Honors Program\, Center for Campus and Community Engagement\, Multicultural Center\, Black Student Cultural Programming Board\, Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Program\, Athens County Public Libraries\, University Libraries\, Honors Tutorial College\, Center for Advising\, Career\, and Experiential Learning\, OHIO Fellows\, and the Ohio Arts Council.

DESCRIPTION:About the show: \nSAQA’s Opposites Attract: \nOpposing forces shape our reality in ways that are both readily apparent as well as hidden. Artwork included in this exhibit explores contradictions and affinities: Yin and Yang\, the irresistible force versus the immovable object\, black and white\, and other types of opposites. \nFrank Klein’s Back at The Ranch: \nLiving on our ranch in DeWitt County\, Texas\, since 1878 has been a great joy\, allowing me to witness the passing seasons and carry on the family legacy. Through conservation practices and photography\, I capture the beauty of our sanctuary\, showcasing unique animal behaviors and the thriving ecosystem. This exhibit shares my cherished landscape\, plants\, and animals that I see every day “Back at the Ranch.” \n  \nThe show will be on view at The Dairy Barn Arts Center from October 6 – November 26\, 2023. People can bag or box up their used good-condition books\, drive them up to the front entrance of the Athens Public Library- and let the Friends volunteers remove them from from their cars. \nBackground Information: \nThe Friends of the Athens County Public Libraries support year round adult programming and Summer at the Library programs at all the branches of the Athens County Public Libraries. In addition\, the Friends has helped various branches with art programs and special projects. Our major source of revenue is earned through our permanent used Book Store located within the Athens Public Library. People also may support The Friends through memberships.

Admission is $12 for a single film or $20 for the double feature. \nSeating Begins         7:00 P.M. \nGHOSTBUSTERS       8:00 P.M. \nTHE EXORCIST       10:00 P.M. \nGHOSTBUSTERS \nAfter the members of a team of scientists lose their cushy positions at a university in New York City\, they decide to become “ghostbusters” to wage a high-tech battle with the supernatural for money. They stumble upon a gateway to another dimension\, a doorway that will release evil upon the city. The Ghostbusters must now save New York from complete destruction. \nTHE EXORCIST \nIn remembrance of William Friedkin\, still dubbed SCARIEST movie of ALL time\, THE EXORCIST is a tale of an exorcism based loosely on actual events. When young Regan starts acting odd — levitating\, speaking in tongues — her worried mother seeks medical help\, only to hit a dead end. A local priest\, however\, thinks the girl may be seized by the devil. The priest makes a request to perform an exorcism\, and the church sends in an expert to help with the difficult job. \nAdmission is $12 for a single film or $20 for the double feature. Tickets cannot be shared or passed from one individual to another. \nNo outside concessions or alcohol permitted. Specialty cocktails and mocktails will be available for purchase\, in addition to concessions. We encourage patrons to bring blankets and layers. It gets chilly when the sun goes down.

DESCRIPTION:About the film \nTaking Root tells the dramatic story of Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai whose simple act of planting trees grew into a nationwide movement to safeguard the environment\, protect human rights\, and defend democracy—a movement for which this charismatic woman became an icon and an international inspiration. This film\, by co-directors Alan Dater and Lisa Merton\, weaves a compelling and dramatic narrative of one woman’s personal journey in the context of the turbulent political and environmental history of her country. \nAbout the series \nAthena Cinema\, University Libraries\, and OHIO’s Environmental Studies Program present the 11th annual Sustainability Film Series. \nThis year’s batch of films will be centered on reflecting the urgency of what is before us. After a decade of screening movies and hosting discussions led by experts from the OHIO student body and faculty and the Athens community detailing the problems facing the world\, this semester’s focus will be on solutions. \nThe films will demonstrate that a collaborative approach to problem-solving — involving all members of our global community\, regardless of age\, ethnicity\, or gender — is a necessity. DESCRIPTION:Ohio University’s Tantrum Theater will present William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night\,” also known as “What You Will\,” directed by guest artist and retired School of Theater professor Shelley Delaney\, in Ohio University’s Forum Theater in the RTV Building\, from Nov 9-11 and 15-18 at 8 p.m. There will also be a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday\, Nov. 18.\n\nA shipwreck in perilous waters creates a sea of confusion on land in Shakespeare’s freewheeling romcom of loss\, longing\, mistaken identity\, obsession\, revenge and madness. Anything can happen in coastal Illyria\, where characters leap in heart first: transcending gender\, upending propriety\, spurning noise ordinances\, or… What You Will!\n\nAn ensemble of students performs Shakespeare’s most musical comedy with the assistance of professional visiting guest artists. The full cast list can be found online here.\n\nAssisting Delaney includes Actor’s Equity Association guest artists Chivas Michael (Sir Toby)\, Steven Strafford (Sir Andrew) and Leslie Ann Boyden (Stage Manager)\, set design by MFA design student Hannah Carey\, costumes by theater faculty member C. David Russell\, lighting design by Tantrum Artistic Director Michael Lincoln\, composition and sound design by guest artist and OHIO alum Megan “Deets” Culley\, music direction by guest artist and OHIO alum Devin Sudman and sound engineering by local guest artist Drew Krag. Running time for the show is approximately two hours and 15 minutes\, with one 15-minute intermission. Long considering himself a failure and now facing financial ruin\, George concludes that his life is not worth living when an angel sent from Heaven arrives to show him how life would be in Bedford Falls if he never existed. \nAbout the series \nAthena Cinema\, Arts for Ohio\, Athens Area Chamber of Commerce\, and the Athens Uptown Business Association present the 9th annual Holiday Film Series & Canned Food Drive! \nAs is tradition\, admission to all Holiday Film Series showings is either a non-perishable food or cash donation supporting Athens Food Pantries. Tickets will be available to claim in exchange for your donation starting December 1st at the theater.
