SUMMARY:Sustainability Series: GREEN WARRIORS: CHILDREN OF LEAD with Dr. Michele Morrone
DESCRIPTION:Though it has been outlawed as an additive in everyday consumer goods like gasoline\, house paint\, and plumbing materials\, lead is still highly valued as a component for the manufacture of building materials\, weapons\, and batteries. SUMMARY:Athens Public Library Author Talk - Dr. Janice Collins: Books to Raise Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker is Dr. Janice Collins\, a Kopenhaver Fellow and an Associate Professor at the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University.  She earned a Ph.D. in Communications from the Scripps College of Communications at Ohio University\, specializing in Media Management and Critical Cultural Theory with an Associate Certification in Women’s Studies. \n250 Years and Still a Slave : From Hip Hop and the Trayvon Martin case to everyday life situations\, Dr. Collins illustrates\, brilliantly and with depth\, how messages are constructed to keep African Americans marginalized and oppressed and European Americans judged unfairly. It takes a rainbow of individuals to make the world a better place…but your healing must begin with you. Through the prism of A.C.E.\, we can all move toward creating an ideal world of mutual respect and love\, of compassion and empathy\, for one another.  A place of peace and self-empowerment brings us all closer to each other–developing our true\, authentic\, positive self. \nTeaching Without Borders : There is no better time than the present to develop learning environments where everyone is treated equally and fairly. Teaching without Borders: Creating Equity and Inclusion through Active Centralized Empowerment is an exemplary resource for programs in education. Dr. Collins explains how her national award-winning pedagogy for full inclusion allows educators to create a classroom environment where all voices can be included and valued and each student has an equal opportunity to excel. It is teaching the human being who happens to be a student–a way Dr. Collins says\, “quiets down the arguments of anyone who feels an injustice in education.”  After eighteen years of development\, students feel empowered and valued without being villainized.

SUMMARY:Cobbler’s Coffee House with Tas Cru & Mary Ann Casale
DESCRIPTION:Cobbler’s Coffee House with Tas Cru & Mary Ann Casale – October 11\, 2024\nTas Cru is most known as a blues artist but his songs show that he is truly a roots music eclectic who refuses to be bound to any one genre. Based out of Central New York he performs in multiple formats ranging from a six-piece backing band to solo acoustic. He sings and plays a wide variety of guitars – at home on either electric\, acoustic\, resonator or cigar box and is known to sprinkle in a bit of harmonica. Tas made his mark in the blues world as the founder and host of his Tas Cru Annual Rum Boogie Jam (2008 – 2023) at the Blues Foundation’s International Blues Challenge in Memphis Today\, Tas tours extensively throughout the US and international touring includes Europe and Canada. \nMary Ann Casale is an eclectic singer-songwriter who always delivers an honest performance. Her voice is rich\, pure\, and refreshingly melodic. Meanwhile\, her guitar playing skills are defined by a deft fingerpicking style\, which is reminiscent of one of her early and most revered influences—the Reverend Gary Davis. Mary Ann’s music may range from sultry jazz-blues to country blues—with tinges of rootsy folk and Americana—but it is always soulful. \nMary Ann and Tas are currently performing in their duo\, Eclipse ~ The Mary Ann Casale & Tas Cru Acoustic Reverie. Also she performs with the Tas Cru band as backing vocalist. Tas and Mary Ann have co-written a number of songs and she assists in arranging as well as sings on his latest albums. \nTas and Mary Ann will be our BITS (Blues in the Schools) educator/presenters at local educational institutions throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley area sponsored to the schools free of charge by the BJFM Society. \nFood is served in the Hotel Lafayette Riverfront Bar & Grill until 8 p.m. Beer\, wine\, coffee\, pop & water will be available in the Gun Room during the show.  Simple appetizers are available in the Gun Room from 7:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. \nAdmission is $15 cash at the door. Door opens at 7:30. You can also purchase tickets at this link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/cobblers-coffee-house-with-tas-cru-and-mary-ann-casale-tickets-1000947790787 \n
