SUMMARY:Marietta College Art Department Presents “Refraction: An Illustrated Journey”
DESCRIPTION:The Marietta College Art Department is pleased to present “Refraction: An Illustrated Journey. An Exhibition of Illustrations and Infographics by Christina (Biedenbach) Ullman ’93\,” on display in Gallery 310 through November 30. An opening reception and brief gallery talk will be held on Saturday\, October 13\, 6-8pm\, during Marietta College’s Homecoming weekend. \nChristina Ullman\, Principal and Creative Director of Ullman Design\, graduated summa cum laude from Marietta College in 1993. After working as an in-house communications and development designer\, she completed graduate work at Ohio University\, earning a master of science in journalism with a focus in visual communication. In 2001\, she returned to Marietta College\, where she taught graphic design and digital illustration\, in addition to serving as department chair. In 2007\, she left academia to return to the industry and opened her design and illustration studio\, Ullman Design\, in Marietta\, Ohio. \nUllman Design is a graphic design\, illustration and interactive media studio with national and international non-profit\, medical and institutional clients. Christina’s work has been recognized by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (23 awards\, including 10 gold awards); Adobe International; American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA); American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine; League of American Communications Professionals; the International Association of Printing House Craftsmen; and LogoLounge. She has received commissions to produce medical informational graphics and illustrations from such prestigious institutions including Harvard University\, the Whitehead Institute at MIT\, Johns Hopkins University\, the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research\, and Nationwide Children’s Hospital. In addition\, her illustrations have been featured in national exhibitions as well as appearing in Graphis Design Annual; Print Regional Design Annual; Hightone Books; and 3×3: The Magazine of Contemporary Illustration. \nChristina describes pieces on display as\, “The work in this exhibition features two varied directions my career as a graphic designer and an illustrator has taken thus far. On one side\, I find inspiration from scientific and medical advances to visualize techniques and treatments. On the other side\, I look to masters such as Salvador Dali\, Réne Magritte\, and Max Ernst as well as contemporary illustrators such as Mariko Ando\, Michael Waraksa\, and Neal Williams. Both types of illustration serve the same purposes: To visualize the intangible; to bring text to life.” \nGallery 310 is located on the third floor of Hermann Fine Art Center on the campus of Marietta College.  Gallery 310 is open Monday through Thursday and Saturday noon to 4pm\, or by appointment at gallery310@marietta.edu.  Gallery 310 observes all Marietta College holidays and breaks. All exhibitions and receptions are free and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Jekyll and Hyde Event
DESCRIPTION:The Southeast Ohio History Center is Selling Tickets to its Signature Event\nAthens\, Ohio – September 25\, 2018:  On Sunday\, October 28\, 2018\, the Southeast Ohio History Center’s powerful pipe organ will sing out as renowned professional organist Dennis James performs the accompanying score of a classic silent film. The evening\, which promises to be entertaining\, is the signature fundraising event for the History Center. Doors will open at 5:30pm for a social hour\, which will include hors d’oeuvres and drinks\, a silent auction\, and a dueling organ and piano concert. The movie begins at 7:00pm with a live auction taking place during the intermission. \n“Last year’s event\, Phantom of the Opera\, was a tremendous success\,” says History Center Executive Director Tom O’Grady. “Our Great Hall took on the characteristics of a 1920s movie palace in a tribute to Hollywood silent films. We packed the place.” Starring the incomparable master of the macabre\, Lon Chaney\, and featuring a cast of 50 principal players and over 500 extras\, the film was presented as it was originally seen in its initial release. \nThis year’s film will be the 1920 classic Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde starring Hollywood’s legendary leading man\, John Barrymore. The silent film captures Robert Louis Stephenson’s tale of an internally conflicted physician with a split-personality to end all split-personalities. Barrymore’s tour-de-force characterization will be accompanied by a solo organ score\, performed by James\, based on a historical compilation of published film music sources. \nSays O’Grady\, “This year\, the event is bigger and better. We have a number of sponsors who are helping to make it a very special evening.” \nFor more than 40 years Dennis James has played a pivotal role in the international revival of silent films with live music. Beginning as an accompanist for university screenings\, James now tours worldwide under auspices of his Silent Film Concerts production company presenting professional silent film programs with accompaniments ranging from solo piano or theatre organ\, to chamber ensembles and full symphony orchestras. Performing to film at an ever-increasing number of sites throughout the world\, James is celebrated for providing the most comprehensive selection of authentic silent films with live music presentations available today. \nJames recently performed sellout silent film programs with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at Orchestra Hall and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra at Meyerson Symphony Center\, and his international silent film presentations have been seen most recently in Canada\, Mexico\, Australia\, New Zealand\, England\, Singapore\, France\, Germany\, Austria\, The Netherlands and Italy. \nTickets to the event are on sale now and can be purchased by calling the Southeast Ohio History Center at 740.592.2280. The price per ticket is $50 for History Center members and $60 for non-members. “They will be going fast\,” says O’Grady. “We already have sold more than 30\, so I’d suggest that people call soon.”
