SUMMARY:Pushing the Surface
DESCRIPTION:The Johnson-Humrickhouse Museum’s exhibition of contemporary art quilts\, Pushing the Surface\, will be open to the public on May 29th. The exhibition is a dance of color\, beauty\, ingenuity\, and story that showcases pieces made by 22 artists with national and international recognition. Surfaces may be pieced and patched as one finds in a traditional quilt\, but they may also be painted\, dyed\, laser printed\, appliquéd\, or fused. The techniques are as varied as the subject matter\, which is as varied as the effects. In the end\, the artists create a truly new statement.

SUMMARY:Experimenting with Metallic Threads: Fiber Art by Lanna Galloway
DESCRIPTION:As a fiber artist I love to break the rules and find a new way of discovery through experimentation. I find extreme joy in taking some of the simplest of patterns and enhancing them with thread. The meditative quality in the manipulation of thread provides both the visual and tactile qualities that drive my work. This series was inspired by learning how to use Kreinik Metallic Thread. Each piece was an invitation to marry old quilt patterns by using metallic thread end cuts. A big thank you goes to Douglas Kreinik of Kreinik Threads for allowing me to experiment with these wonderful threads.–Lanna Galloway \nOn display on the Circulation Area Wall.

SUMMARY:Sculpted and Tailored Dolls: The Artful Craft of Vivian Huggins
DESCRIPTION:I have been making dolls for a long time out of everything from paper\, to sticks and mud.  I wanted to make a doll that had lots of detail.  I used clay for the hands\, head and feet\, and then attached them to a cloth body.  The first clay dolls I made were with air-dry clay when I was 13 in 2018.  The air-dry clay was heavy and would crumble easily\, especially when we played with them.  In the last two years I have discovered paper-clay\, which is far better at staying together\, and much lighter.  My favorite dolls to make wear historic fashions.  I sometimes model them after real people\, and I am just beginning to experiment with storybook characters.–Vivian Huggins \nOn exhibit in the Glass Display Cases.

SUMMARY:Summer Book Club: The Queen's Gambit (3 meetings) [VIRTUAL PROGRAM]
DESCRIPTION:The late Walter Tevis\, a former Athenian and admired English professor at Ohio U\, wrote several critically-acclaimed novels that inspired Hollywood filmmaking (The Hustler\, The Man Who Fell to Earth\, etc). The latest triumph is his 1983 novel The Queen’s Gambit\, which is the basis for a hit Netflix mini-series of the same name. This is a feminist novel of interesting social dynamics and psychological depth\, dealing with an unlikely young woman (a troubled orphan)\, who evolves into a national chess champion. \nOur guest discussion leader is Dr. Nicole Reynolds\, Associate Professor in the Department of English at Ohio University.

SUMMARY:Stuart's Opera House Art Opening: Deep in Ohio
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the art opening of Deep in Ohio\, a show by Savannah Freeman of Moonville Print Shop.\nMore about Savannah Freeman:\nMy work is inspired by the natural world and almost exclusively features plants and animals native to Southeast Ohio — where I live with my family. I am completely self-taught and printmaking started as a way for me to portray my love for the biodiversity of my area. I will never stop being amazed by the sheer number of plants native to this part of the world and I hope that my work can help others appreciate it and care for it too.

SUMMARY:Nationally known artist in residency in Nelsonville
DESCRIPTION:Paper Circle Press Release\, July 8\, 2021 \nEvent Contact: Scout B Ery (she/her)\, shop.papercircle@gmail.com; (740) 331-1893; papercircle.org \nEvent Date: July 26 through 30\, 2021 \nEvent Location: Paper Circle\, 35 W. Columbus St.\, Nelsonville\, OH 45764 \nHeadline: Nationally-Known Artist Delita Martin to Have Art Residency at Paper Circle Studio \nNELSONVILLE\, OHIO: During the week of July 26–30\, 2021\, Paper Circle in Nelsonville\, Ohio\, will be hosting the nationally known printmaker and multimedia artist\, Delita Martin\, for a paper making residency. \nMartin\, who is based in Huffman\, TX\, works as a full-time artist in her studio\, Black Box Press [https://blackboxpressstudio.com/]. While in Nelsonville\, she will be learning the craft of hand papermaking at Paper Circle\, whose mission is to educate the public about the creation of handmade paper. \n“We’re very excited and honored to have an artist of Delita’s stature spending time at our studio\,” says Paper Circle executive director\, Scout Ery. Ery met the artist while visiting museums in Washington\, DC\, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. They talked about Paper Circle’s studio and the idea for the residency was established. \nMartin’s work explores the power of the narrative impulse\, drawing inspiration from oral traditions and from vintage and family photographs. In her process\, she layers various printmaking\, drawing\, sewing\, collaging\, and painting techniques which allow her to create portraits that fuse the real and the fantastic. Her work combines signs and symbols with storytelling to offer other identities and narratives for women of color. Martin’s goal is to create images as a visual language to tell the story of women that have often been marginalized\, offering a different perspective of the lives of black women. \nMartin is the founding member of Black Women of Print\, and her work is in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington\, DC\, among many other places. \nAt the end of her residency\, Martin will be donating pieces of completed work to the Paper Circle gallery. Later\, Paper Circle will be auctioning these works of art. \nThis engagement is supported by the Arts Midwest GIG Fund\, a program of Arts Midwest that is funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Local support comes from Paper Circle\,  Stuart’s Opera House and Nelsonville Emporium. \nPaper Circle is a non-profit studio and gallery located at 35 W. Columbus Street in Nelsonville\, OH. Founded by Sara Gilfert in 2002\, the organization is dedicated to the creation and promotion of art using handmade paper from recycled and natural fibers. The working studio promotes public understanding through exhibits and educational programs. Its signature paper\, O-Gami\, is uniquely suited to origami art.
