SUMMARY:LIVING YEARS: Conversation With The Director
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin us Tuesday\, August 30th at 7pm for a conversation with the director of Living Years\, Brenda Williams Gillis\, who made a documentary about her father’s life as a quadriplegic. Admission is free. \nAbout the Film \nSeptember 8th\, 1956\, Highway 395\, 33 miles north of Bishop\, 4:15am.\, Gale Williams fell asleep at the wheel. \nOn the eve of his 18th birthday\, he crashed his car in a remote area of California and became a quadriplegic. \n\n\nIn those days people with such severe injuries were only expected to live 10-15 years. To survive\, mentally and physically\, Gale set his mind to tackling small goals\, focusing only on what he was able to do\, and through a supportive family and church community\, he rebuilt his life. \nAt 82\, and most likely the longest living quadriplegic\, Gale’s life story shows us that there are no limitations to what we can accomplish if we set our minds to it. \n\n\nAbout the Director \nAt the age of 3 months old\, I was adopted by parents that were unable to have their own biological children. I grew up in Santa Monica\, California\, in a unique and loving environment with a father who was a quadriplegic\, which made my childhood very different than my peers. \nIn my 40’s I had the idea to make a documentary about my father’s remarkable life. Just before turning 50\, having no film experience\, I finally started\, and three years later my debut film\, Living Years has been completed. I currently live in Woodland Hills CA with my husband and 2 daughters.

SUMMARY:Fall Sustainability Series: REVOLUTION GENERATION
DESCRIPTION:Sustainability Series Theme: Get Involved \nAbout the film \nThe number of Millennials in the United States — those born between approximately 1978 and 2000 — is near 80 million people. They’re the most diverse generation in America\, with 56 percent of them registered as politically Independent … and every single one of them will be needed if the planet is to avoid climate catastrophe. In THE REVOLUTION GENERATION\, filmmakers Josh Tickell and Rebecca Tickell (whose previous films Fuel\, Pump\, and Kiss the Ground have examined oil\, capitalism\, and a regenerative way forward for the earth) spotlight a generation that has been mischaracterized\, mislabeled\, and mistakenly mocked. \nAbout the series \nAthena Cinema\, University Libraries and Environmental Studies Program present the 10th annual Sustainability Film Series. \nIn keeping with all previous series\, each film will be followed by a panel discussion featuring faculty members\, students and community members. The panel discussion for these films will be presented by OU’s Center for Campus & Community Engagement. \nFollowing each film we invite audience members to join us for a panel discussion hosted by faculty members\, students and community members. Please join us for a conversation following these beautiful\, thought-provoking and timely films. \nThe series is possible thanks to the support of: Voinovich School of Leadership\nand Public Affairs\, OHIO Honors Program\, Honors Tutorial College\, Cutler Scholars\, Office of\nSustainability\, Center for Campus & Community Engagement\, University College\, Athens\nInternational Film and Video Festival\, and beloved nonprofits and businesses. \nFree admission and post-show discussion\, as part of the Fall Sustainability Series.

SUMMARY:From the Hills and Hollers: COAL MINER’S DAUGHTER with Dr. Rachel Terman
DESCRIPTION:About the film \nLoretta Lynn was one of the first female superstars in country music and remains a defining presence within the genre; with her strong\, clear\, hard-country voice and tough\, no-nonsense songs about husbands who cheat and wives who weren’t about to be pushed around\, Lynn introduced a feminist mindset to Nashville years before the phrase “women’s liberation” became common currency. \n  \nAbout the series \nFollowing the success of the full capacity screening of our 50th anniversary of Appalshop’s STRANGER WITH A CAMERA screening in 2020\, the Athena Cinema and partners present an exciting new film series on Appalachian culture and depictions in film. \nThe mission of the series is to connect Athens and the university community to the surrounding region by examining the different ways Appalachia has been represented through film. We seek to develop cultural competency and humility by showing viewers the way both the assets and challenges the region faces have been viewed by those who have the power to represent it on screen. \nShort introduction/lectures will provide context for the film and introduce the underlying issues represented in film and other media. All events in the series are presented with free admission. \nThis series is sponsored by the 2023 Appalachian Studies Association Conference\, Ohio Honors Program\, Center for Campus and Community Engagement\, Multicultural Center\, Black Student Cultural Programming Board\, Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Program\, Athens County Public Libraries\, University Libraries\, Honors Tutorial College\, Center for Advising\, Career\, and Experiential Learning\, and OHIO Fellows.

Founded in 1992\, we are an organization dedicated to helping Ohioans afford their reproductive choices. We believe that everyone should be able to make their own reproductive decisions—and we work to make that a reality in Ohio. We are a founding member of the National Network of Abortion Funds\, which includes more than 100 abortion funds around the United States and overseas. \nWe provide financial assistance and practical support (transportation\, housing\, and more) to help patients afford contraception\, emergency contraception\, and abortion services. We distribute funds to clinics throughout Ohio. These clinics\, in turn\, use the funds to provide financial assistance to those in need. Since 1992\, Abortion Fund of Ohio has helped thousands pay for their reproductive choices. \nSponsored by \nOhio University Division of Diversity and Inclusion Women’s Center \nAthenian’s for Bodily Autonomy

SUMMARY:OU PARENTS WEEKEND: Monty Python and the Holy Grail: Sing Along!
DESCRIPTION:We’re celebrating OU Parents weekend with a showing of MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL\, a classic comedy sure to have your parents in stitches. \nFrom its opening multi-language titles (that sure looks like Swedish) to the closing arrest of the entire Dark Ages cast by modern-day bobbies\, Monty Python and the Holy Grail helped to define “irreverence” and became an instant cult classic. This time the Pythonites savage the legend of King Arthur\, juxtaposing some excellently selected exterior locations with an unending stream of anachronistic one-liners\, non sequiturs\, and slapstick set pieces. The Knights of the Round Table set off in search of the Holy Grail on foot\, as their lackeys make clippety-clop sounds with coconut shells.

SUMMARY:Buddhist Bootcamp author\, Timber Hawkeye\, coming to Marietta\, OH
DESCRIPTION:The First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta\, OH will be hosting author Timber Hawkeye. \nPress Release \n  \nBuddhist Boot Camp author Timber Hawkeye coming to Marietta \n  \nTimber Hawkeye\, author of Buddhist Boot Camp and Faithfully Religionless\, has just released a new book\, called The Opposite of Namaste.  As part of the new book tour\, he will be hosting a book talk and discussion on Sunday\, September 25 from 1:00 to 2:30 in the social hall at the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta\, 232 Third St.  There is no cost to attend the event\, however\, donations will be accepted. \n \nHis first book\, Buddhist Boot Camp\, is a collection of journal entries and letters from Hawaii. Even though each chapter is only a page or two long\, it shares a secular and non-sectarian approach to being at peace with the world.  His follow-up memoir\, Faithfully Religionless\, offers a glimpse into a life filled with insight and motivation. It’s about letting go of the need to know\, the difference between feelings and emotions\, the disparity between truths and facts\, and the countless benefits of mindful living.  As for Timber’s newest book\, The Opposite of Namaste\, he states\, “As always\, the intention is to awaken\, enlighten\, enrich\, and inspire ways for us to mindfully live at peace with the world (both within and around us)\, not because nobody pushes our buttons\, but because we get to a place where we don’t have any buttons that can be pushed.” \n \nMore information about Timber Hawkeye\, his podcasts\, and books for purchase may be found at buddhistbootcamp.com.  Timber Hawkeye has created a FaceBook event for the afternoon discussion. Please feel free to share this information with friends and invite them to attend.  FB Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/5147755991938212 \n  \n### \n  \nFor information\, contact: \nChris Jacobs \n(740) 373-6045

SUMMARY:Fall Sustainability Series: FOOD FOR CHANGE & CAMP YOSHI
DESCRIPTION:Sustainability Series Theme: Food and Community \nAbout the film \nFOOD FOR CHANGE (82 minutes) \nFood For Change focuses on food co-ops as a force for dynamic social and economic change in American culture. This is the first film to examine the important historical role played by food co-ops\, their pioneering quest for organic foods\, and their current efforts to create regional food systems. SUMMARY:From the Hills and Hollers: THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES with Dr. Tiffany Arnold
DESCRIPTION:About the film \nWhen John Klein\, a respected Washington Post journalist\, and his wife Mary find the dream house they have been hunting for\, life could hardly get better. Then on their joyful ride home the dream is shattered when Mary crashes the car and is killed. While removing Mary’s possessions from the hospital\, John discovers a sketchpad covered with odd drawings\, variations of the same eerie apparition. John is haunted by the unsettling images. \nOne night\, while driving from Washington\, John loses his way and ends up on a deserted country highway in Point Pleasant\, West Virginia — four hundred miles from where he thought he was. When John decides to stay in Point Pleasant to explore the reports of unexplained phenomena in the town\, he soon realizes that they may all be related – not just to each other\, but also to the strange sketches Mary had been obsessively drawing just hours before her death.
