SUMMARY:The Met: Live in HD: Bizet’s CARMEN
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed English director Carrie Cracknell brings a vital new production of one of opera’s most enduringly powerful works\, reinvigorating the classic story with a staging that moves the action to the modern day and finds at the heart of the drama issues that could not be more relevant today: gendered violence\, abusive labor structures\, and the desire to break through societal boundaries. Dazzling young mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina leads a powerhouse quartet of stars in the complex and volatile title role\, alongside tenor Piotr Beczała as Carmen’s troubled lover Don José\, soprano Angel Blue as the loyal Micaëla\, and bass-baritone Kyle Ketelsen as the swaggering Escamillo. SUMMARY:Author Ron Luce speaks on new book\, 'The Millfield Mine Disaster' at Little Professor
DESCRIPTION:Millfield Mine Disaster Revisited \nIn his new book (January 2024)\, The Millfield Mine Disaster\, Ron Luce\, former Director of the Athens County Historical Society and Museum\, tells the history of the original Poston Mine No. 6 and its subsequent status as Sunday Creek Coal Company Mine No. 6. Ohio’s worst mine disaster occurred at this mine on Wednesday\, November 5\, 1930\, resulting in the deaths of 82 men (including the president and other leaders of the Sunday Creek Coal Company). \nLuce carefully explores the history of the mine itself and then provides details about the 1930 disaster as documented by experts from the Ohio Bureau of Mines and the US Mine Bureau. Additionally\, he provides information about the people involved\, including names and personal information about the men who died. \nPublished by History Press\, the book explores not only what happened on that fateful day\, but how and why 82 men died\, 56 women became widows\, and 137 dependents became fatherless in an instant. This book pulls together all of the facts for the first time to tell what occurred when a major corporation put profit ahead of worker safety. \n“I wrote this book to get past ninety-four years of misinformation about what happened\, to honor and correctly identify the men who died\, and to provide the public with documentation that has not been widely shared\,” Luce said. \nOn Saturday\, February 10th\, Luce will be at The Little Professor Book Center from 2 to 5 p.m. to sign copies of the book and provide a short presentation. \nThe Millfield Mine Disaster is available in bookstores and online.

SUMMARY:A Reading of the Play\, Free Man of Color\, by Charles Smith
DESCRIPTION:Free Man of Color\, by OHIO Distinguished Professor of Playwriting Emeritus Charles Smith\, is the story of John Newton Templeton\, a formerly enslaved African American who graduated from Ohio University fifty years before the end of slavery. In the process\, Templeton unexpectedly taught the president of the university the true meaning of education. \nEmancipated after the death of his enslaver\, John Newton Templeton travels to the free state of Ohio where he meets an avowed abolitionist Presbyterian minister Robert Wilson. Wilson\, president of the fledging Ohio University\, saw the opportunity to use the young Templeton to prove to the pro-slavery factions in America that African Americans were capable of the same academic excellence as whites. President Wilson brings Templeton to his home that she shares with his wife\, Jane\, where Templeton works as the couple’s “student servant” while attending classes. Although Templeton excels in most areas of study\, his achievements in other areas are quite different than what Wilson had wanted\, needed\, and expected. In this play about race\, culture\, and the differences between education and assimilation in America\, Wilson is forced to reevaluate his abolitionist views. \nFree Man of Color received its world premiere at Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago and was performed on the OHIO campus for the university’s 2004 Bicentennial celebration. Recipient of the 2004 Jeff Award for Best New Work\, the play has been produced by theaters across the country including The Colony Theatre in Burbank\, CA.; Penguin Rep in Stony Point\, NY; Off-Broadway by Penguin Rep in Association with Chase Mishkin\, 59E59\, New York; and Independent Theatre\, Adelaide\, South Australia. It has been published by Dramatic Publishing and Northwestern Press. \nThis presentation of Free Man of Color will take place as a stage door show on the stage of Templeton Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium\, Saturday\, February 10 at 3:00 p.m. The presentation will be directed by Shelley Delaney\, OHIO School of Theater professor emerita who originated the role of Jane for the world premiere production. Tyler Rollinson\, 2009 OHIO BFA in Acting\, will be featured as John Newton Templeton; Ellie Clark 2015 OHIO MFA in Acting and current Assistant Professor in the School of Theater\, will be featured as Jane Wilson; and Evan Bergman\, an Atlanta-based actor\, theatre director\, and educator\, will be featured as Robert Wilson. A talkback with the playwright\, Charles Smith\, will follow the presentation. \nThe event is free and open to the public with a suggested donation to the Division of Diversity and Inclusion which includes numerous programs and scholarships from which to choose.

SUMMARY:Sustainability Series: CHASING ICE
DESCRIPTION:In 2007\, photojournalist James Balog and a team of researchers\, climate scientists\, engineers\, and mountaineers\, founded the EIS (Extreme Ice Survey) to study and document the climatic phenomenon of melting ice in the Earth’s seas and glaciers. Balog figured (correctly) that there was no better way to alert people to the effects of global warming than by showing them irrefutable photographic proof of the planet’s increasing temperatures which are driving the disappearance of ice formations that have lasted for tens of thousands of years. Through Balog’s lens\, viewers get a stark reminder that action against human-led climate change must be taken immediately\, before the ecological scales are forever thrown out of balance. \n \nWinner of an Emmy for Outstanding Nature Programming and a Satellite Award for Best Documentary\, Chasing Ice was directed by Jeff Orlowski-Yang\, who also oversaw the cinematography for the production. The film is a visual triumph coupled to a story of the urgent need to reexamine our impact on our fragile environment. \n  \nAbout the series \nAthena Cinema\, University Libraries\, and OHIO’s Environmental Studies Program present the 11th annual Sustainability Film Series. \nThis year’s batch of films will be centered on reflecting the urgency of what is before us. After a decade of screening movies and hosting discussions led by experts from the OHIO student body and faculty and the Athens community detailing the problems facing the world\, this semester’s focus will be on solutions. \nThe films will demonstrate that a collaborative approach to problem-solving — involving all members of our global community\, regardless of age\, ethnicity\, or gender — is a necessity. Education is the first crucial step in both understanding the world’s problems and developing sustainable solutions. \nFollowing the screening of each of these beautiful\, thought-provoking\, and timely films\, audience members are invited to join us for a panel discussion hosted by OHIO faculty members\, students\, and members of the Athens community. \nThe series is sponsored by Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs\, OHIO Honors Program\, Honors Tutorial College\, Cutler Scholars\, Office of Sustainability\, Center for Campus & Community Engagement\, University College and beloved nonprofits and businesses. \nFree admission and post-show discussion as part of the Spring Sustainability Series.

SUMMARY:Classics & Cocktails: JACKIE BROWN
DESCRIPTION:Our Classics & Cocktails series wraps up with the 1997 Quentin Tarantino classic JACKIE BROWN on February 23rd at 7pm. We’ll be pairing the film with a fun specialty cocktail called the Jackie’s Rum Punch in honor of Elmore Leonard’s novel Rum Punch. Made with Pineapple Rum\, orange\, lime\, ginger\, sugar\, tiki bitters\, allspice dram\, Skadi’s Cup Cyser\, seltzer. \nAdmission is $8. Drink prices vary. \nAbout the Film \nA flight attendant with a criminal past gets nabbed by the ATF for smuggling. Under pressure to become an informant against the drug dealer she works for\, she must find a way to secure her future without getting killed. \n \nJACKIE BROWN is Quentin Tarantino’s third cinematic dose of retro Hollywood flair. His choice to cast 1970s blaxploitation icon Pam Grier in the lead role was a stroke of genius and continues to connect the film to the soulful charm of its predecessors. Add to that an ensemble cast including Robert DeNiro\, Samuel L. Jackson\, Bridgette Fonda\, and even Tony Curtis\, this film\, while more understated than most of his others\, is one of Tarantino’s best! \nAlong with the specialty cocktail\, we will have a full menu of wine\, local beer and local ciders. \nClick here to view the rest of the films in this series.

SUMMARY:Heroes In Color: THE LAST DRAGON
DESCRIPTION:Leroy “Bruce Leeroy” Green embarks on a quest through the gritty streets of New York to complete his training and gain the level of martial arts mastery that will make him a true black belt like his hero Bruce Lee. When Sho’nuff\, the self-proclaimed “Shogun of Harlem”\, catches wind of Leroy’s abilities\, he challenges the youth to a fight to see who will glow brightest as the baddest butt-kicker in town. \nReleased in 1985\, this film broke with tradition by featuring a mostly-black cast in a kung-fu action movie. Additionally\, it was produced by Motown’s head-honcho Barry Gordy and\, as a result\, boasts a soundtrack that includes the smooth sounds of artists like Debarge\, Smokey Robinson\, The Temptations\, Rockwell\, and Stevie Wonder. As much an action-packed martial arts extravaganza as it is a love letter to all things ’80s\, The Last Dragon is a cult classic that you surely won’t want to miss! \nEach show will feature added content such as trivia\, introductions\, raffles\, themed drinks and more! \nSeating and pre-show activities at 7:00 p.m.\, film start time 7:30 p.m. \nAbout the series \nThe mission of this film series is to synergize education and entertainment\, creating a unique experience for our community. SUMMARY:Sustainability Series: THE GREAT GREEN WALL
DESCRIPTION:A landmass stretching uninterrupted for nearly 4000 miles\, from Senegal on the Atlantic Coast to Djibouti on the coast of the Red Sea\, Africa’s Sahel region serves as a climatic transition zone between the Sahara Desert to the north and the more tropical environments to the south. The Sahel not only embodies a diverse population and geography as it passes through many of the continent’s nations\, it also\, sadly\, exemplifies the devastating effects that climate change is having on our planet. As desertification creeps through the region and soil erosion undermines the efforts of agriculture\, social problems like famine\, mass migration\, and armed conflict have taken root and threaten to destroy an already-fragile ecosystem. \nTHE GREAT GREEN WALL chronicles the efforts of an ambitious reforestation plan striving to restore the environmental health and revitalize the economies of the region. Written and directed by Jared P Scott and produced by Oscar-nominated director Fernando Meirelles (City of God)\, the film follows Malian musician/activist Inna Modja as she journeys from coast-to-coast\, gathering stories of resilience and self-determination by\, sharing songs with\, and spreading hope among the people on the Sahel’s frontline in the battle against a changing landscape. \nAbout the series \nAthena Cinema\, University Libraries\, and OHIO’s Environmental Studies Program present the 11th annual Sustainability Film Series.
