Factory Street is thrilled to invite our friends and community members to join us as we celebrate the end of a successful spring semester of dance! \nFSS is grateful to be supported by generous donors who make it possible for us to offer affordable arts education in our community. This year\, FSS has debuted new donor tiers for those willing to support our studio through a dance themed donation. Our levels begin with “Plie” at $35 and extend to “Changement” for donations of $1000+. Please visit factorystreetstdio.org/donate to give. We need your support to keep programming like our Spring Dance Concert alive for years to come! \nFSS is a non-profit dance studio founded in 1978\, proudly serving Southeast Ohio by providing non-competitive dance education while promoting dance technique\, self-esteem\, personal growth and a cooperative spirit. SUMMARY:Calliope 30th Anniversary concert: Where the Light Begins
DESCRIPTION:The Calliope Feminist Choir will perform its Spring Concert\, Where the Light Begins\, Friday\, May 12 at 7:30 pm and Saturday\, May 13\, at 4 pm at the Athens First Presbyterian Church\, 2 N. Court St.\, Athens. Celebrating its 30th anniversary\, the choir is led by Artistic Director\, Debra Spangler and accompanied by longtime former director Nancy Pierce. The concert will also feature local guest artists Becca Lachman\, Kelly Madewell\, Greg Bikowski\, and Heather Scott. Spangler commented on the program\, “This concert is a collection of songs that evoke community and friendship\, defined by how we care for and celebrate each other. What better songs to share with our community?” \nFor information about sliding scale tickets\, visit Calliope’s eventbrite page or calliopefeministchoir.org. A portion of concert proceeds will be shared with Athens United Immigrant Support Project\, a group that turns care into action for those having to flee their homes. An accessible entrance is on Washington Street\, and the concert space is accessible by elevator. ASL Interpreting will be provided. To protect singers and audience from the many viruses present in our community\, masking will be required and seating limited to 60% capacity. \nThe program includes songs by local composers Becca Lachman and Elise McMath (in an arrangement by Nancy Pierce). Another piece on the program is Elizabeth Alexander’s Sue Loves Butter. Alexander\, who grew up in Portsmouth Ohio also composed the musical\, Split Hickory\, set in Central Appalachia and recently workshopped at Shawnee State University. \nCalliope is a treble-voiced Athens-based community choir with members from Athens and surrounding counties. Calliope maintains a policy of sliding scale for tickets and dues so that anyone can participate regardless of ability to pay. \n

SUMMARY:RESILIENCE
DESCRIPTION:SETICC\, Athens HOPE\, NAMI Athens and the Athena Cinema invite you to a free screening of RESILIENCE on Thursday\, May 18th at 7pm. \nResearchers have recently discovered a dangerous biological syndrome caused by abuse and neglect during childhood. As the new documentary Resilience reveals\, toxic stress can trigger hormones that wreak havoc on the brains and bodies of children\, putting them at a greater risk for disease\, homelessness\, prison time\, and early death. While the broader impacts of poverty worsen the risk\, no segment of society is immune. Resilience\, however\, also chronicles the dawn of a movement that is determined to fight back. Trailblazers in pediatrics\, education\, and social welfare are using cutting-edge science and field-tested therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress—and the dark legacy of a childhood that no child would choose. \nA panel discussion will take place after the screening.
