It’s our big family day! Come out to the BOBCAT SHELTER at Strouds Run State Park. This shelter is near the bathrooms\, has shade\, and is close to the amenities offered at the State Park. We encourage people to bring and share food. We hope to organize food trucks and have additional catered food available. DESCRIPTION:The Athens Food Rescue is holding its 3rd annual Rubber Duck Derby and Family Fun Olympics July 14th 11-3 pm at West State Street Park. We have free field day games for families and kids\, a silent auction\, a food truck and the rubber duck race in the Hocking River.  We sell tickets that correspond to a duck in the race for a chance to win 3 prizes\, but the event is free and open to everyone! This year the prizes are: 1st place $550 gift card to Salt Fork State Park Cabins\, 2nd place $200 Snow Trails ski or tubing pass plus $50 visa card\, and 3rd place 20 visit Splash Pass to Athens City Pool plus $100 Athena Grand gift card.  All proceeds go to collecting leftover surplus food from local food establishments.  Come join the fun on the 14th!

DESCRIPTION:The Vinton County Chamber of Commerce has partnered with Raccoon Creek Outfitters to host Backpacks and Kayaks\, a unique fundraising event to raise money to purchase backpacks and school supplies for local children in need. Beginning at noon on August 4\, ticket holders will be treated to a kayaking scavenger hunt on Raccoon Creek\, followed by food\, music\, and a bonfire. Food will be catered by Taste of the Good Life. Craft beer will be supplied by Pat Quackenbush. Live music will be provided by The Blues Cowboys. There will be door prizes\, games\, and activities throughout the event. The event will run from noon to at least 7:00 p.m. \nTickets cost $35 per person and are available for sale at the Vinton County Chamber of Commerce office and Raccoon Creek Outfitters. Children younger than 12 do not need a ticket. Tickets for the music performance(s) only (no kayak rides or food) can be purchased at the gate on the day of the event for $10. Children must be at least 4 years of age to ride in a canoe or kayak. \nProceeds from ticket sales will pay for event expenses and benefit other activities by the Vinton County Chamber of Commerce. SUMMARY:Working with People on the Midst of Violence in Northern Iraq
DESCRIPTION:Hear more about the current situation in Iraq\, the work of local people working for justice and peace\, and how civilians are affected by Turkish and Iranian Military bombing of their villages. \nRecently back from her summer in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq\, Peggy will share stories of local people living in the midst of violence\, struggling for justice and peaceful responses. \nThis presentation will be followed by a time for discussion. Light snacks will be provided. \nFor the past 16 years\, Peggy has been doing international peacemaking and human rights work\, mostly in Iraq\, but also in Palestine\, through the organization “Christian Peacemaking Teams.”  She has also worked in northeastern Nigeria with those affected by Boko Haram.  She has been especially interested in interfaith efforts in these countries for reconciliation and social justice. \nPeggy has written two books based on her work in Iraq with the Christian Peacemaker Teams: Iraq: A Journey of Hope and Peace (2004)\, and Walking Through Fire: Iraqis’ Struggle for Justice and Reconciliation (2013)\, which will be available for purchase at the event.
