SUMMARY:Athens Food Rescue Rubber Duck Derby
DESCRIPTION:Rubber ducks will be racing to the finish line soon to benefit Athens Food Rescue and the group’s efforts to feed the hungry. \nAFR’s 4th annual Rubber Duck Derby is Saturday\, July 13th from 11 AM to 2 PM at the West State Street Park in Athens.  There will be food\, family games\, prizes and\, of course\, the duck race. \nDozens of plastic ducks will be turned loose in the Hocking River for a dash downstream.  The first finishers will earn prizes for their adopted owners. \nThe top prize is a Columbus Experience Package valued at $500.  It includes passes to COSI\, the zoo and the Franklin Park Conservatory and a $200 gift card. \nYou can adopt a duck for $5 or buy a “six quack” for $25 or a flock of 30 ducks for $100. \nAdoptions can be made in three ways: at Friendly Paws\, Nicole Conrath\, DDS\, the Farmacy and Inhale Yoga Studio; by email at Athensfoodrescue@gmail.com; and from AFR volunteers. \nThe annual Duck Derby is a significant source of revenue for Athens Food Rescue\, which fights hunger by reducing food waste. Volunteers pick up excess food from area restaurants and other sources and redistribute it to feed hundreds of people in need\, including residents of Athens’ homeless and domestic-violence shelters. \nIn 2018 AFR rescued over 30\,500 pounds of food. \n“We help to feed nearly 1\,000 people each week through the dozen or so charities that we provide food\,” said Teresa Curtiss\, executive director.  “We do this work with roughly 20 volunteers and collect food from a dozen donors throughout the city.” \nIf you’d like to learn more about AFR\, visit the group’s website – www.athensfoodrescue.com. \n

SUMMARY:August Morsbag Pod Meetup
DESCRIPTION:In case you hadn’t heard\, in May 2019 we launched a Morsbag ‘Pod’ at Athens Makerspace. What is a Morsbag\, you ask? \nAn international movement known as Morsbags has formed ‘pods’ of sewists all over the world who meet up to sociably upcycle fabrics into reusable bags that are then given away for FREE! At stores\, at markets and fairs\, wrapped around gifts\, to colleagues\, friends\, and to anyone and anywhere you can think of to get them out into the world and replacing countless single-use bags in the years they’ll last. \nWhy replace plastic bags? However much we think we are recycling or properly disposing of bags after use\, the sad truth is that many of them escape and end up in the ocean. Plastic bags in water then become serial killers. They are eaten by marine wildlife\, which often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish. The fish\, whale\, turtle\, or bird dies and decomposes around the bag. The bag floats off\, ready for its next victim. \nLearn more at https://www.morsbags.com/ \nOur August Athens Morsbag Pod meetup will be\nWednesday\, August 21st from 6-9pm at Athens Makerspace. \nWe always welcome sewists to bring their own sewing machines\, so we can accomodate more people at the event. Snacks provided! \nIf you don’t yet know how to sew\, but want to help with this project\, don’t worry: we’re happy to teach newbies. Come have a fun time sewing in a group for a good cause! Registration opens at 12:00 pm\, with prize drawings and awards at 3:30.\nWhat is Paddle for Polio Plus? Glad you asked! #Paddle2019 is a unique fundraiser that combined the ever-popular “poker run” game with boating. The initiative is over 3 decades strong and Rotary is #thisclose to complete eradication. Only a handful of cases have been reported in 2019\, but the final push is more critical than ever. It is estimated that it will take about $1 Billion to finish the job.
