The entire train ride is roughly an hour and a half. \nHow do we get the wine? You’ll recieve three drink tickets while boarding the train and you can exchange one ticket for a glass of wine. If you would like to purchase more drink tickets you can purchase additional tickets for $5 a ticket. \nCan I bring my own wine? No\, no outside alcohol is permitted. \nWill there be beer? No. Just wine. \nCan I bring my own food? Yes! Feel free to bring snacks in additional to the snacks provided. \nWhat are/ when do we receive the snacks provided? DESCRIPTION:In case you hadn’t heard\, in May 2019 we launched a Morsbag ‘Pod’ at Athens Makerspace. What is a Morsbag\, you ask? \nAn international movement known as Morsbags has formed ‘pods’ of sewists all over the world who meet up to sociably upcycle fabrics into reusable bags that are then given away for FREE! At stores\, at markets and fairs\, wrapped around gifts\, to colleagues\, friends\, and to anyone and anywhere you can think of to get them out into the world and replacing countless single-use bags in the years they’ll last. \nWhy replace plastic bags? However much we think we are recycling or properly disposing of bags after use\, the sad truth is that many of them escape and end up in the ocean. Plastic bags in water then become serial killers. They are eaten by marine wildlife\, which often mistake plastic bags for jellyfish. The fish\, whale\, turtle\, or bird dies and decomposes around the bag. DESCRIPTION:NAMI Lecture: \nTopic: Living with and Overcoming PTSD and Other Invisible Wounds of War \nSpeaker: Kelley Macek \nTime and Place: Athens Public Library\, 30 Home Street\, August 22\, 6:30 PM \n  \n \nAfter having done three tours of duty in Iraq as a military intelligence soldier specializing in the Middle East and Arabic language\, Kelley Macek retired from the U.S. Army in 2010. Upon returning to the States\, she began to realize that the experience had changed her. She was now very reclusive\, over-sensitive to minor States-side stimulations\, and suffered from insomnia and attention deficit disorder. Fortunately\, before she left the Army\, she was diagnosed with\, and began treatment for PTSD and other war-related disorders.  The treatments have been effective and Kelley is now pursuing a graduate degree in Communications from Ohio University. Glad you asked! #Paddle2019 is a unique fundraiser that combined the ever-popular “poker run” game with boating. Participants will be dealt a 5 card poker hand and will then set out in their kayaks or canoes across beautiful Lake Snowden to stop at a total of 5 checkpoints to receive stamps that eventually validate their poker hand. All participants receive a complimentary ticket into our door prize drawing ($500 value!!) with their registration fee. At each checkpoint\, boaters will have the opportunity to purchase additional chances at the door prize drawing by paying $1 and completing a simple\, fun challenge.\nThis year\, the event will also feature a Guided Bike Ride around the Lake Snowden grounds.\nThe event is family-friendly and will feature music\, free food and tons of games and activities for the entire family!\nPaddle for Polio Plus is a unique fundraiser aimed to raise awareness and support for Rotary’s quest to completely eradicate polio from the world. The initiative is over 3 decades strong and Rotary is #thisclose to complete eradication. Only a handful of cases have been reported in 2019\, but the final push is more critical than ever. It is estimated that it will take about $1 Billion to finish the job.

The Superhero 5k features costumed runners\, a course full of superhero favorites and maybe even a villain or 2 to chase through the course. Before the race\, participants and spectators can enjoy snacks\, games\, music and more. This years Superhero 5k is brought to you by OhioHealth and Power 105! \nHappening just before the 5k\, the youngest superheroes around will participate in a Kids Adventure Course complete with silly obstacles and fun\, all while the Superhero Runners cheer them on before beginning their 5k race! After the race\, stick around for prizes going to our top runners\, the best costumes and the top fundraisers.  \nAll of the proceeds from the event support the mission of the Athens CASA/GAL Program\, which is a court-based agency that recruits and trains community volunteers to serve as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASAs). CASA Volunteers represent the best interests of children who are involved in the Juvenile Court System because of abuse and neglect. Without CASA Volunteers\, children are left to navigate the system without a trained advocate by their side. Doors will open at 5:00pm for picking up tickets at the Nelsonville Depot at 33 Canal Street. \nFrequently Asked Questions: \nHow long is the trip? The entire train ride is roughly an hour and a half. \nHow do we get the wine? You’ll recieve three drink tickets while boarding the train and you can exchange one ticket for a glass of wine. If you would like to purchase more drink tickets you can purchase additional tickets for $5 a ticket. \nCan I bring my own wine? No\, no outside alcohol is permitted. \nWill there be beer? No. Just wine. \nCan I bring my own food? Yes! Feel free to bring snacks in additional to the snacks provided. \nWhat are/ when do we receive the snacks provided? DESCRIPTION:The Athens High Student Council is contacting and recruiting local veterans to attend a Veteran’s Day Assembly on Friday\, November 8\, 2019 at Athens High School to thank them for their service.  Student Council will serve refreshments to our veterans from 9:30-10 am during an informal reception with the assembly at 10:00 am.  All students at Athens High will be in attendance in the gymnasium.  The Marching Band and Symphonic Choir will perform.  Student Council will lead the program.  Local veterans have also been asked to speak along with AHS Principal Chad Springer who is an army veteran himself.  We would like our local veterans to sign up either online through the AHS Website (https://www.athenscsd.org/1/Home) or by calling the AHS main office 740-797-4521 ext. 1 so that we can arrange appropriate seating and refreshments.
