Join us for all or part of this day of cleaning\, sorting\, painting\, and merriment as we refresh the house for a busy summer! Of course\, many hands make light work and with longer days\, everyone wants to get the work done so the playing can begin! We will be at the house on 18 W. College Street (directly across from the Athens PD) from 11 to 4pm. There are meters in front of the house and parking in the nearby garage if you are driving.  If you are an OU student and you have any donations of canned or unopened food or sundries (personal hygiene products)\, we’ll be glad to accept them for a Pantry Table for distribution to our diners and guests each week. IN NOVEMBER 1978 I GOT HIRED AT NORTH AMERICAN COAL COMPANY’S POWHATAN 6 MINE & WORKED THERE UNTIL GETTING LAID OFF IN FEBRUARY 1982. NACCO LAID OFF 250 EMPLOYEES AT THAT TIME. \n BACK IN 2009 OR 2010 I SPOKE TO A MAN THAT SUGGESTED I PUT A MEMORIAL STONE AT THE MINE WHERE MY DAD WAS KILLED. NOT UNTIL 2011 DID I THINK ABOUT OUR CONVERSATION AGAIN. AFTER SPEAKING TO THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS\, I HAD TO TALK TO THE JUDGE TO GET PERMISSION TO PUT THE MEMORIAL STONE ON THE COURTHOUSE LAWN. ON SATURDAY OCTOBER 19\, 2013 THERE WAS A COMMUNITY DEDICATION SERVICE FOR THE MINERS MEMORIAL STONE.

Also appearing at the rededication will be Athens Mayor Steve Patterson\, and state Rep. Jay Edwards\, of Nelsonville. \nThe monument was dedicated in 1938 by the Daughters of the Union Veterans of the Civil War\, “in memory of our fathers\, the Boys in Blue.” Some 2\,610 Athens County residents served in the Union Army from 1861 to 1865. \nThe ceremony will include Civil War music climaxed by musicians and the audience joining in singing the “Battle Hymn of the Republic.”\nThe monument’s restoration was sponsored by the Athens area’s John S. The event is being hosted in conjunction with Recovery Month. \nNational Recovery Month (Recovery Month)\, which started in 1989\, is a national observance held every September to promote and support new evidence-based treatment and recovery practices\, the nation’s strong and proud recovery community\, and the dedication of service providers and communities who make recovery in all its forms possible. The goal is to increase public awareness surrounding mental health and addiction recovery. \nWe will be providing and promoting the use of Fentanyl strips\, Narcan and other harm reduction strategies including distributing literature regarding alcoholism prevention.
