DESCRIPTION:Join us for a guided bike tour from Lake Snowden to the Village of Albany. At Lake Snowden\, expert birder Joe Brehm will lead the group in a birding session on the dam of the lake. Then we will ride 6.5 miles to the Village of Albany for a historical walk through. We will be hearing stories from local historians about the underground railroad along with one of the first colleges for people of color\, the Albany Enterprise Academy. We will also be visiting a local coffee shop located in a historical building to view old photographs of Albany along with hearing the owners vision of the village in the future. To conclude the tour we’ll bike 6.5 miles back to Lake Snowden. The tour will begin and end at the Big Oak shelter house with the train playground at Lake Snowden. This is a non-supported ride\, meaning participants should come prepared with personal bike repair kits and water. Participants should expect gravel roads\, some single track trail and 700 ft elevation gain with 5.5% max grade. Helmets are required and minor children are permitted on this tour but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. A portion of all ticket sales will go to the efforts of the Mount Zion Baptist Church Preservation Society to restore the historic church as a thriving community hub once again. Your participation will help Mount Zion accomplish their mission of supporting the contributions\, history\, and ongoing concerns of Black Americans everywhere.

Proceeds from the concert will go to the purchase of hard-to-find medical supplies such as IFAKs (individual first aid kits) that Stewart and Hill will be delivering to Poland in mid-May for distribution in Ukraine through the organization UA First Aid\, run by Ukrainian Bobcats.

DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join Passion Works at The Great Athens Yard Sale on June 4\, 2022 at the Zenner House 30 Utah Pl\, Athens\, OH. The event will take place from 9am – 3pm with everything being marked down by 50% at 2pm. \nJeffery Chaddock with Envisage Wealth (Ameriprise Financial) is the host of the event. There will be music and free popcorn. 100% of sales will go directly to Passion Works. 50% will support the Passion Works Endowment at the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio and 50% will go towards general operating funds. \nYard Sale donations have been coming in from Passion Works supporters in the Athens area and Columbus. Lots of treasures have already been donated\, including: holiday decorations\, housewares\, collectibles\, toys and games\, Noritake China\, paintings\, and more….. \nPassion Works is still accepting good “quality” donations up until June 3rd. They can be dropped off at Passion Works\, 20 E. State St.\, Athens\, OH from 10am – 6pm Monday through Saturday.

SUMMARY:Barbour Book Fair
DESCRIPTION:The Barbour Book Fair will be a fun\, family friendly event for the Summer. Barbour Publishing will be hosting the event in their front lawn and will be selling a wide variety of books at extremely low prices. Some books will reach as low as 50 cents! All proceeds from book sales at the event will be donated to the local charity\, We are Fostering Love. This charity provides respite care and support to fostering families in Tuscarawas County. The event will also include 2 food trucks. The first truck will be an ice cream truck from Cadiz\, OH. Ice Cream Island is known for their fun and delicious ice cream creations and will be at the event to add some fun and cool down the warm Summer day. The 2nd truck is based out of Coshocton\, OH and is called The Kitchen. They will be selling more lunch style foods like burgers\, hot dogs\, nachos\, sloppy joes\, and so on. It’ll be a great event to shop for Summer reads and picnic out on the front lawn with some delicious food and sweet treats!

DESCRIPTION:Community members are invited to the League of Women Voters of Athens County’s New Member Social on Saturday\, July 16 from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. Attendees will learn about the local\, state\, and national league and how to get involved in protecting Democracy by putting their skills and interests to work locally.  League membership is open to anyone at least 16 years old. \nThe gathering will take place at West State Street Park in the shelter house on the cul-de-sac. The parking is plentiful and breakfast refreshments will be served. \nThe Athens League works on many initiatives including voter registration and education\, candidate forums\, voter guides\, and our diversity\, equity\, and inclusion initiatives.  We also host public and member-only events exploring current issues. \nThe formal program will begin at 10:20 and end at 11:00 but those interested are encouraged to stop by at any point that is convenient in their busy Saturday morning. \nThe LWVAC is a nonpartisan\, grassroots nonprofit dedicated to empowering everyone to fully participate in our democracy. The league works to increase understanding of major public policy issues\, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
