SUMMARY:Lyceum Luncheon Speaker Series: furnaces of Southeast Ohio
DESCRIPTION:Lyceum Luncheon Speaker Series Starts back up for 2025 \nThe Southeast Ohio History Center is restarting it Lyceum Luncheon Speaker Series for 2025 with a presentation of the iron furnaces of Southeast Ohio on Thursday\, February 20 at noon. Tom O’Grady\, from the History Center\, will kick off the brown bag speaker series with a presentation entitled Stone Pyramids of Southeast Ohio Forests: Iron Furnaces Helped Build America. \nMore than 60 iron furnaces were built between the Ohio River and Hocking County in the Hanging Rock Region of Ohio. Small towns grew up around the iron furnaces while the forests disappeared. Few remnants of this important industry survive into the 21st century. \nThe Lyceum Luncheon speaker series is held at the History Center on the third Thursday each month at noon. The History Center is located at 24 West State Street with limited parking in the rear off North Congress. \nFor more information about this presentation or about the History Center call 740-593-3380 or visit www.southeastohiohistory.org. \nRemains of the Hope Furnace at Lake Hope State Park. The stone furnace is a small\, but critical part\, of an iron furnace operation. Image from Lake Hope State Park. (Provided)

SUMMARY:Multicultural Genealogical Center Speaker and Light Lunch
DESCRIPTION:Tom O’Grady will talk about The Burr Oak Connection:  Interesting Characters from Morgan\, Athens and Perry Counties at the Multicultural Genealogical Center in Chesterhill\, Ohio.  Once asked to give a history of the area that became Burr Oak Lake\, Tom realized he was ignorant of the story of the farms and churches along the tributaries of Sunday Creek that were inundated with the installation of the Congressman Tom Jenkins Dam.  But\, he could tell stories about some of the interesting characters. \n  \nTom O’Grady sailed as a deck worker on the Great Lakes aboard the ore carrier\, S.S. Middletown\, a sister-ship of the ill-fated Edmund Fitzgerald. He served two years in the armed forces with a tour in South Korea. Tom surveyed for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. In 1984 he launched the first comprehensive curbside recycling program in the state of Ohio in Athens County. Tom has been promoting waste reduction and a sustainable economy for more than forty years.  He has been a voice for the preservation of the historic Athens Asylum.  O’Grady has also been an instructor of Observational Astronomy in the evenings at Ohio University for forty years. He has spent the past twenty-five years as a student of Ohio history researching its natural and cultural geography\, the mound builders\, the barnbuilders and regional settlement\, Ohio canals\, iron furnaces\, and several of Ohio’s interesting characters and their stories. O’Grady is a founding board member of Friends of Ohio Barns and serves on the board of Ohio’s Hill Country Heritage Area. Tom has been working with the leadership of the Athens County Historical Society\, now the Southeast Ohio History Center\, for more than 25 years.

SUMMARY:Wolfe Plains Mounds Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Wolfe Plains Group is a Late Adena culture group of 30 earthworks including 22 conical mounds and nine circular enclosures\, originally known as Wolf’s Plains\, located a few miles to the northwest of Athens\, is a relatively flat terrace in an area of hilly terrain in southeastern Ohio’s Hocking River valley.  \nWe will meet at Solid Ground Farm a few miles away from The Plains to load the Rising Appalachia van. This is the third largest Adena mound complex after Chillicothe and Charleston\, WV.  Only three mounds remain visible in The Plains. We have the records of the mound excavations to be able to tell you what was found inside of them. The tour will take us through the area that used to be inhabited by mounds with an explanation of Ohio prehistory using the original maps of the area. We will stop at the Plains for bathroom breaks and a look at the “schoolhouse” mound that now has a home on top of it. Next\, we will stop at the parking lot near the High school and walk over to a mound that is on private property near the Nature Conservancy land in The Plains. Finally\, We will visit the two largest remaining mounds off of Mounds St before returning to Solid Ground Farm. This tour helps to support Native culture and heritage in Ohio and Athens County.
