SUMMARY:Ross County Historical Society: 'Mammoths\, Mastodons and Early Peoples in Ross County at the End of the Ice Age'
DESCRIPTION:The Ross County Historical Society is excited to welcome local educator and archaeological researcher Gary Argabright for a special evening presentation\, “Mammoths\, Mastodons and Early Peoples in Ross County at the End of the Ice Age\,” on Saturday\, August 30\, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public\, and will be held at the Ross County Heritage Center\, located at 45 W. Fifth St\, Chillicothe\, OH\, 45601. \nArgabright\, a respected voice in the region’s archaeological and educational community\, will explore the fascinating history of Ross County’s Ice Age megafauna— creatures like mammoths and mastodons—and their interactions with the area’s earliest human inhabitants. Drawing from his recent research and travel to key paleontological sites\, including Big Bone Lick (KY)\, the Waco Mammoth Site (TX)\, Lubbock Lake (TX)\, and Blackwater Draw (NM)\, he’ll share fresh perspectives on how global and local changes shaped life at the end of the last Ice Age. \nWhether you’re a history buff\, science enthusiast\, student\, or simply curious about Ohio’s ancient past\, this event promises to be both educational and inspiring. Be sure to stop by early for some light refreshments.

SUMMARY:Discovering History Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Land Hunger: Ohio and the Western Frontiers\nIn his talk\, Mansel G. Blackford will explore how notions and realities of land use were central to the experiences of Native Americans\, African Americans\, and Euro Americans living in the Ohio Country over several centuries. Moreover\, Blackford will examine how Ohioans (and others) sought to transfer knowledge gained in the Midwest to two other regions\, the Oregon Country and the Great Plains–with only partial success. Throughout\, the talk’s emphasis will be on men and women coming to grips with environments new to them by looking at how they lived in frontier times. The talk will\, thus\, address questions of importance to anyone interested in relationships between people and their environments: Above all\, how did ideas about the environment\, especially conceptions about water and land\, shape actions; and what have been the consequences of those actions down to the present day? Questions like these are relevant to us today\, as we grapple with the many environmental challenges resulting from climate changes. \nMansel G. Blackford is a professor emeritus of history at the Ohio State University\, where he worked in the fields of business history and frontier history for forty years. He is the author or coauthor of a dozen books\, several of which deal specifically with Ohio and midwestern history—most recently Land Hunger: Ohio and the Western Frontiers (Athens: Ohio University Press\, 2025). \nBlackford’s talk will be based on his just-published book Land Hunger: Ohio and the Western Frontiers (Athens: Ohio University Press\, 2025)\, which is available for sale in our Museum Gift Shop. \nThis event is sponsored by the Washington County Public Library\, and is FREE and open to the public.

SUMMARY:OCEES 2025 Darwin Lecture – Featuring Douglas W. Tallamy
DESCRIPTION:Recent headlines about global insect declines\, the impending extinction of one million species worldwide\, and three billion fewer birds in North America are a bleak reality check about how ineffective our current landscape designs have been at sustaining the plants and animals that sustain us.  Such losses are not an option if we wish to continue our current standard of living on Planet Earth. The good news is that none of this is inevitable. Tallamy will discuss simple steps that each of us can- and must- take to reverse declining biodiversity on our own properties and will explain why we\, ourselves\, are nature’s best hope. \n  \nThis event is free and open to the public and OU community. Please join us at 6:30 on October 15th at 135 Walter Hall\, 25 South Green Drive\, Athens\, Ohio.

SUMMARY:When Africa Balanced Power: Pre-Colonial and Colonial Lessons on Balance of Power\, Alliance Formation\, and Diplomacy for Reimagining International Relations
DESCRIPTION:The Contemporary History Institute welcomes Dr. Isaac Nunoo for his talk “When Africa Balanced Power.” \nDr. Isaac Nunoo separates international relations from its Western-centric foundations by exploring and incorporating African perspectives on diplomacy\, alliance formation\, and power balancing. His talk will draw upon case studies from colonial and postcolonial eras to highlight African agency\, resilience\, and practices\, some of which pre-date the Westphalian system. His findings question disciplinary ahistoricism\, stress integrated and interdisciplinary approaches\, and foster a pluralist conception of global politics that recognizes the epistemologies and experiences of the Global South. \nDr. Isaac Nunoo is a Senior Lecturer in the Centre of African and International Studies at University of Cape Coast\, Ghana. His work focuses on foreign policy analysis\, security and conflict\, and diplomacy within international relations\, especially how African states and global actors negotiate and navigate a changing international system.

SUMMARY:Local Historian to Present on Early Mapping of Ohio’s Archeological Features at November MCC Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of the The Mound City Chapter of the Archaeological Society of Ohio will take place on Tuesday\, November 11\, 2025\, from 6:30PM to 8:15PM at the Ross County Historical Society. \nThe evening’s program will feature a compelling presentation titled “Early Statewide Mapping of Ohio’s Archeological Features: 1896– 1914” by local historian Randy Sanders. \nSanders will trace the origins of Ohio’s archeological mapping efforts beginning in the late 19th century\, highlighting the work of Warren K. Moorehead and the Ohio State Archeological and Historical Society (OSAHS). These efforts culminated in the creation of a large-scale archeological map documenting Ohio’s rich prehistoric heritage—including mounds\, village sites\, fortifications\, and enclosures—by township. \nDrawing from Moorehead’s 1897 field reports and the seminal 1914 Archeological Atlas of Ohio by William C. Mills\, Sanders will explore how more than 70 individuals contributed to these early documentation efforts. He will also examine the scope and challenges of archeological fieldwork during that era\, particularly within the Muskingum\, Scioto\, and Ohio River valleys. \nThe presentation will also feature new findings from a 2025 watershed study conducted for the Second Edition of The Ohio Stream Guide. Using data from the 1914 atlas\, the study identifies which of Ohio’s major watersheds contained the highest concentration and density of archeological features. The results shed new light on how geography influenced prehistoric settlement and activity in Ohio. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Community members\, educators\, historians\, and anyone interested in Ohio’s archeological past are encouraged to attend.
