SUMMARY:Multicultural Genealogical Center of Southeastern Ohio Speaker and Light Lunch
DESCRIPTION:The Multicultural Genealogical Center of Southeastern Ohio welcomes Julie Pepper who recently retired from the United States Postal Service after almost 30 years.  In 2013 she was named Ohio’s Postmaster of the Year.  Julie is researching her genealogy and Southeastern Ohio Post Offices\, many of which have been closed or recently forced to change their hours after August 23\, 2012.  \nJulie Nelson Pepper was born in Columbus\, Ohio and raised near Maxville\, Ohio in Perry County.  She served as Postmaster in Murray City\, Chauncey\, McConnelsville\, Marietta\, Athens\, Zanesville and Columbus\, GA. In 2003\, Julie moved to Chesterhill\, Ohio. She is married to Matthew Pepper\, Postmaster of Beverly\, Ohio and they have five adult children.  \nJulie served as the President of The League of Postmasters of Ohio\, a professional organization\, for many years.  She worked to advocate national political decisions on behalf of Postmasters. In 2012\, Chesterhill was reclassified as a remotely managed Post Office rather than as a discontinued Post Office as originally proposed. The League of Postmasters was influential with this decision making process.   \n

SUMMARY:Local Historian to Present on Early Mapping of Ohio’s Archeological Features at November MCC Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The next meeting of the The Mound City Chapter of the Archaeological Society of Ohio will take place on Tuesday\, November 11\, 2025\, from 6:30PM to 8:15PM at the Ross County Historical Society. \nThe evening’s program will feature a compelling presentation titled “Early Statewide Mapping of Ohio’s Archeological Features: 1896– 1914” by local historian Randy Sanders. \nSanders will trace the origins of Ohio’s archeological mapping efforts beginning in the late 19th century\, highlighting the work of Warren K. Moorehead and the Ohio State Archeological and Historical Society (OSAHS). These efforts culminated in the creation of a large-scale archeological map documenting Ohio’s rich prehistoric heritage—including mounds\, village sites\, fortifications\, and enclosures—by township. \nDrawing from Moorehead’s 1897 field reports and the seminal 1914 Archeological Atlas of Ohio by William C. Mills\, Sanders will explore how more than 70 individuals contributed to these early documentation efforts. He will also examine the scope and challenges of archeological fieldwork during that era\, particularly within the Muskingum\, Scioto\, and Ohio River valleys. \nThe presentation will also feature new findings from a 2025 watershed study conducted for the Second Edition of The Ohio Stream Guide. Using data from the 1914 atlas\, the study identifies which of Ohio’s major watersheds contained the highest concentration and density of archeological features. The results shed new light on how geography influenced prehistoric settlement and activity in Ohio. \nThis event is free and open to the public. Community members\, educators\, historians\, and anyone interested in Ohio’s archeological past are encouraged to attend.

SUMMARY:Sustainability Series: BEEN HERE STAY HERE
DESCRIPTION:On a remote island\, a deeply-rooted Christian fishing community grapples with the quiet erosion of their land and their traditions. Their centuries-old way of life\, sustained by faith and the rhythms of the bay\, is now at a poignant crossroads—one that may force them from the only home they’ve ever known. \nBeen Here Stay Here is a quiet\, immersive portrait of Tangier Island\, a centuries-old Christian fishing community in Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay. Long used as a symbol in the national climate conversation\, Tangier is often portrayed through a lens of skepticism or scorn—framed as “America’s first climate casualty” and written off as a place in denial. This film offers another way in. With no experts\, voiceovers\, or statistics\, Been Here Stay Here invites viewers into the lived experience of the island’s residents—through faith\, memory\, and the rhythms of daily life. By stepping away from spectacle and alarm\, the film allows the community to speak on its own terms\, revealing not denial but devotion: to place\, to faith\, and to a way of life that refuses easy categorization. Inspired by the work of climate scientist and Evangelical Christian Dr. Katharine Hayhoe\, the film models a conversation rooted in relationship\, not rhetoric. In the end\, it’s less about the water at the doorstep than it is about what rises within us when we choose to listen\, stay\, and understand.
