DESCRIPTION: MGC welcomes Kenton Butcher as he shares “Country Roads and Paper Trails”\, part of a book project called Illegible: Black Appalachian Self-Publishing\, 1990-2010.  The talk will begin with the history of Appalachian stereotypes and the way in which they skew ideas about the history of the region and its inhabitants. It shows that one of the effects of Appalachian stereotypes is to erase the history of people of color from the region\, and the talk then looks at how Black Appalachians have used self-publishing to preserve and transmit their own histories. While many people consider self-published books as unimportant or unsuccessful—and in an age when A. I. seems to make human writing obsolete—this talk is also about why self-authorship and self-publishing remains vital.  \nKenton Butcher is an assistant professor at Bucknell University where he teaches courses in African American literature. He graduated from Federal Hocking High School in 2005 and received a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 2023. He recently received a fellowship from the Institute of Citizens and Scholars to complete his first book project\, titled Illegible: Black Appalachian Self-Publishing\, 1990-2010. \n

SUMMARY:Children's Fishing Tournament
DESCRIPTION:To encourage children in the sport of fishing and to help them develop a love for the outdoors. We ask all participants to bring a fishing pole and chair. We provide bait\, cookout and prizes. We also give out fishing poles to all participants.

DESCRIPTION:Want to get your brain and body moving and meet new friends? Scottish Country Dance is a lively social dance—think contra\, but with a bit more footwork and a lot of fun. \nStart at the very beginning. No partner or experience needed. If you can walk briskly\, you can dance! \nThis 9-week class meets Sundays at the Athens Community Center: June 7 – August 9 (no class July 26). Each week builds on the last\, so this is a full series rather than drop-in. (Missing one class is totally fine—you’ll be able to catch up.) \nCost: $45 for the full series \nRegister online: https://ohiorscds.org/athens/ —or sign up at the front desk when you arrive. \nWhat to wear: Comfortable clothes you can move in. DESCRIPTION:It’s playtime at The Nest!\n\nBreak the routine\, get out of the house and come let your little ones play in a fresh space while you get to talk with other grown-ups for awhile!\n\nCome and go as you please anytime during our open play hours.  Toys and activities are geared towards babies and toddlers but older siblings are welcome to come along.\n\nWhile you’re here\, peruse the lending library of books\, DVDs and even baby carriers free to borrow!\n\nTuesdays masks are optional\, while Thursdays are mask-only for those who prefer a “mask-on” environment.\n\nDisinfectant wipes are always available and we have a tub for toys that have been “mouthed” so they can be washed before future use.\n\nA changing table and toddler potty are available as well as a bottle warmer and fridge for storing formula/milk.

Runs take place on the bikepath\, so you have the opportunity to go as short or as long as you’d like.
