SUMMARY:Paws and Purrs for Seniors Info and Foster Training Session
DESCRIPTION:The Athens County Humane Society (ACHS) has received a grant from Age Friendly Athens County to recruit foster caretakers\, aged 60 and over\, for cats awaiting adoption. Fosters are essential for providing temporary homes for cats and kittens . “The ‘Paws and Purrs for Seniors’ grant will enable ACHS to increase the number of cats and kittens helped this year\, and perhaps for years to come. ACHS will hold several information sessions April through June at the Athens Public Library to recruit and train fosters for the “Paws and Purrs for Seniors” grant project: April 17th\, 1-3pm; May 8th\, 1-3pm; and June 13th\, 1-3pm.

SUMMARY:BAD PRESS
DESCRIPTION:About the film \nBad Press follows the journey of tenacious Muscogee reporter Angel Ellis as she fights to bring free press back after it was swiftly repealed on the eve of an election year for the Muscogee Nation. The election is full of twists and turns\, and she refuses to leave the fate of free press to its outcome. \nThis documentary provides unparalleled insight into the inner workings of a modern Native American tribe\, revealing a holistic look into the structure of its media\, sovereignty\, humor and elections that few audiences will have experienced before. \nAbout the Speakers \nThe screening of BAD PRESS will be accompanied by a short talk given by filmmaker Rebecca Landsberry-Baker\, reporter/film protagonist Angel Ellis\, and Ohio University E.W. Scripps Master’s in Journalism Alum\, public relations specialist\, documentary reporter\, and IJA member Sarah Liese. \nRebecca Landsberry-Baker \nRebecca Landsberry-Baker is an enrolled citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and the executive director of the Native American Journalists Association. BAD PRESS premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and received the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Freedom of Expression. \nAngel Ellis \nAngel Ellis is a citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and has lived\, worked\, and played within the tribes’ reservation boundaries most of her life. Growing up\, her heroes had press passes rather than capes. Ellis learned to read with a newspaper at the breakfast table with her grandfather\, and the fascination never faded. Ellis advocates for and educates on ethical coverage of Indigenous topics and communities. \nSarah Liese \nSarah Liese\, MS (Navajo/Turtle Mountain Chippewa) is a public relations specialist at Beau Rivage in Biloxi\, Mississippi. Previously\, she was a 2022 Indigenous Non-Fiction Sundance Institute Fellow\, researcher\, and mitigation video specialist. SUMMARY:From the Hills and Hollers: CALLS FROM HOME: PRISON RADIO IN APPALACHIA with Sylvia Ryerson
DESCRIPTION:About the film \nSylvia\, a young radio DJ\, hosts “Calls from Home”\, a weekly radio call-in show in rural Kentucky that sends messages and shouts-out to people incarcerated in prisons throughout Central Appalachia\, allowing the inmates and their families to bridge the iron bars of the corrections system and share a much-needed connection. Director Sylvia Ryerson will be at this event to introduce the film. \nAbout the director/speaker \nSylvia Ryerson is a fifth year PhD candidate in American Studies at Yale. Before graduate school\, she worked for nine years as a DJ and radio journalist for WMMT F.M. in Whitesburg\, Kentucky. \nAbout the series \nDue to the resounding success of the series launch during 2022-2023\, we are thrilled to present the 2nd annual From the Hills and Hollers: Appalachian Film Series for 2023-2024. \nThe series seeks to foster a deeper connection between the Athens city and university communities and the cultural legacy of the surrounding region through films that examine the many facets\, both positive and negative\, of life in Appalachia. This batch of films is\, in large part\, the product of filmmakers who have intimate knowledge of living in this environment and\, as a result\, are well-suited for representing the realities of Appalachia on the big screen. \nShort introduction/lectures will provide context for the film and introduce the underlying issues represented in film and other media. All events in the series are presented with free admission. \nThis screening will take place at the Athena Cinema located at 20 S. Court St. \nThis series is sponsored by the College of Health Sciences and Professions\, the Department of Sociology and Anthropology\, Ohio Honors Program\, Center for Campus and Community Engagement\, Athens County Public Libraries\, University Libraries\, GO Local\, University College\, the Center for Law\, Justice\, and Culture\,  and the Ohio Arts Council.

SUMMARY:Spring Biodiversity Hiking Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Spring Biodiversity Hiking Tour offers an opportunity to explore the unique geological features and spring flora and fauna of Adams County\, Ohio\, guided by local naturalist\, Eric Davenport. \nThe tour will showcase two natural areas in Peebles\, Ohio\, beginning at Davis Memorial State Nature Preserve and ending at Chalet Nivale Nature Preserve. We’ll cover about 5 miles throughout the day at a leisurely pace as we learn how to identify wildflowers with the help of a dichotomous key. This is a wonderful event for beginners to improve their identification skills and discover more about the area. \nWhat makes Adams County the most biodiverse region in Ohio? \nAdams County is located in a small\, triangular region nestled in southern Ohio\, known as the Bluegrass Region\, which expands into Kentucky. It is also considered to be on the edge of Appalachia. The landscape features limestone\, dolomite\, and shale bedrock\, with a mix of gentle and steep slopes. This diverse area creates a unique habitat for rare wildlife and plant species\, including the Allegheny woodrat\, green salamander\, blackjack oak\, wall rue fern\, Canby’s mountain lover or cliff green\, wood lily\, and American bluehearts. \n\n\n\n\nWe will be meeting at the main entrance\, but parking will be available at both locations. \nMain (north) entrance for the Davis Memorial State Nature Preserve \n\nGPS Coordinates: 38.940133\,-83.3541143\n\nSouth entrance for the Davis Memorial State Nature Preserve \n\nGPS Coordinates: 38.934254\,-83.3579222\n\n\nParticipants are asked to bring their own water and packed lunches. In addition\, we will have extra water\, light refreshments\, and recommendations for local eateries available.\nRemember to pack some rain gear\, extra socks\, and waterproof boots in case we encounter any shallow creeks.\nMinor children are permitted on this tour but must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.\n\nA portion of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Arc of Appalachia.
