SUMMARY:Lyceum Luncheon Speaker Series – The Clash at Sunday Creek: Rum\, Romanism\, and Rebellion
DESCRIPTION:Lyceum Luncheon Speaker Series – The Clash at Sunday Creek: Rum\, Romanism\, and Rebellion \nThe Southeast Ohio History Center Lyceum Speaker Series presents a program on the some of the unrest in the Hocking Valley Coal Fields on Thursday\, September 19th at noon at 24 West State Street in Athens\, Ohio. \nJobie Seimer\, former Green Beret\, Author and Military Historian will discuss his book The Clash at Sunday Creek: Rum\, Romanism\, and Rebellion. Seimer’s talk\, addressing the Battle of Corning (September 19\, 1880)\, the first battle of the Ohio National Guard\, will take place at the History Center on the 144th anniversary of the clash. \nSeimer describes Southeast Ohio as a rugged region in the 1800s with an influx of migrants and immigrants who changed to landscape\, the nature of life\, and the local economy. Nowhere was this truer than in Corning and Rendville\, mining towns reminiscent of the Wild West era. Gun duels\, scandals\, lynchings\, and murders plagued these places\, as intrepid European immigrants and tenacious Black miners relied on raw grit to survive rowdy saloons and perilous coal mines. These impoverished workers also took bold stands against affluent mine operators\, leading to intense clashes with the Ohio National Guard. \nSeimer will touch on the social interaction between Rendville’s Black and Corning’s Immigrant miners. Seimer will be selling copies of his book and be available for book signing. \nJobie Siemer is a military historian and combat veteran who is passionate about historical preservation in Ohio’s Little Cities of Black Diamonds region. While living in Corning\, Ohio\, he held the position of President Pro Temp for the village council. After completing his studies at Ohio University\, he commissioned in the U.S. Army. As an infantry officer in the Eighty-Second Airborne Division and\, later\, as a member of U.S. Army Special Forces\, also known as Green Berets\, he led numerous combat missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. After his military service\, he earned his master’s degree in military history. \nFor more information on the Southeast Ohio History Center or about the Lyceum brown bag luncheon speaker series call 740-592-2280 or visit the web at www.southeastohiohistory.org. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Sustainability Series: GREEN WARRIORS: CHILDREN OF LEAD with Dr. Michele Morrone

Wherever lead is extracted\, refined\, or turned into essential products that keep economies moving\, the element leaves a poisonous legacy behind.

SUMMARY:Front Porch Thursday: River Walk
DESCRIPTION:Meet us on the front porch of the Kennedy Museum of Art. We will begin our walk with a brief conversation in the exhibition what makes a river? Participants will then enjoy a ten-minute walk down to the Hocking River along the Ridges footpath. Together\, we will consider the relationships between people and the watersheds they live within\, including our own responsibility to the Hocking and to other beings who live along the 102-mile-long river as it flows down to the Ohio river. We will also discuss the 1968-71 rechannelization of the Hocking as it pertains to the present. Participants are invited into a session of careful observation and to consider their impact on the watershed closest to home. Led by Aubrey jo Blue\, Curatorial Graduate Assistant\, KMA. Please note this program requires walking up and down a gravel footpath on the grounds of The Ridges.

SUMMARY:Athens Public Library Author Talk - Dr. Janice Collins: Books to Raise Consciousness
DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker is Dr. Janice Collins\, a Kopenhaver Fellow and an Associate Professor at the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University.  She earned a Ph.D. in Communications from the Scripps College of Communications at Ohio University\, specializing in Media Management and Critical Cultural Theory with an Associate Certification in Women’s Studies. \n250 Years and Still a Slave : From Hip Hop and the Trayvon Martin case to everyday life situations\, Dr. Collins illustrates\, brilliantly and with depth\, how messages are constructed to keep African Americans marginalized and oppressed and European Americans judged unfairly. It takes a rainbow of individuals to make the world a better place…but your healing must begin with you. Through the prism of A.C.E.\, we can all move toward creating an ideal world of mutual respect and love\, of compassion and empathy\, for one another.  A place of peace and self-empowerment brings us all closer to each other–developing our true\, authentic\, positive self. \nTeaching Without Borders : There is no better time than the present to develop learning environments where everyone is treated equally and fairly. Teaching without Borders: Creating Equity and Inclusion through Active Centralized Empowerment is an exemplary resource for programs in education. Dr. Collins explains how her national award-winning pedagogy for full inclusion allows educators to create a classroom environment where all voices can be included and valued and each student has an equal opportunity to excel. It is teaching the human being who happens to be a student–a way Dr. Collins says\, “quiets down the arguments of anyone who feels an injustice in education.”  After eighteen years of development\, students feel empowered and valued without being villainized.
