DESCRIPTION:This year’s Baker Peace Conference (April 16–17) examines the state of American power. In what ways is American influence in the world changing? How should we assess U.S. strength? How healthy are key aspects of American soft power\, such as the country’s systems of higher education and democratic governance? These and other questions will be addressed by the conference’s nine speakers\, who come from a range of academic\, journalistic\, military\, and diplomatic backgrounds. \n  \nThe conference will begin on the evening of Thursday\, April 16th with a keynote address delivered by retired brigadier general and business executive\, Mark Arnold. The following day the conference will have two panels\, a domestic-focused one in the morning from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM and a foreign-focused one in the afternoon from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Each panel will have four 25-minute talks followed by twenty minutes of Q&A. All events will be free\, open to the public\, and supplied with refreshments. DESCRIPTION:False Promises: The Struggle for Black Voting Rights in 1800’s Ohio \nIn False Promises\, the fight for Black voting rights in Ohio comes alive through narratives of men of color who defied the state’s nineteenth-century restrictions on suffrage. Though ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment ostensibly extended the franchise\, state election laws still forced men of color into a perilous struggle for full citizenship. Ric S. Sheffield depicts their courage and determination\, revealing their humanity through stories of sacrifice\, resistance\, and hope. Weaving together historical records with imaginative reconstructions of dialogue\, setting\, and descriptive elements beyond the dusty courthouse pages\, these stories recount the lived experiences of those who risked everything to exercise their right to vote. \nRic S. Sheffield\, author of We Got By: A Black Family’s Journey in the Heartland and False Promises: The Struggle for Black Voting Rights in 1800s Ohio\, has researched\, taught\, written\, and lectured extensively about rural diversity in general\, and the Black experience in small town America in particular. As co-director (with Prof. Howard Sacks\, Kenyon College) of the award-winning Community Within: Black Experience in Knox County\, Ohio project and co-director (with Prof. Brooke Bryan\, Antioch College) of the Great Lakes Colleges Association’s (GLCA) Oral History in the Liberal Arts (OHLA) program\, he has designed and executed projects intended to explore minority communities in small town America. SUMMARY:Wolfe Plains Mounds Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Wolfe Plains Group is a Late Adena culture group of 30 earthworks including 22 conical mounds and nine circular enclosures\, originally known as Wolfe’s Plains\, located a few miles to the northwest of Athens\, is a relatively flat terrace in an area of hilly terrain in southeastern Ohio’s Hocking River valley.  \nWe will meet at Solid Ground Farm a few miles away from The Plains to load the Rising Appalachia van. This is the third largest Adena mound complex after Chillicothe and Charleston\, WV.  Only three mounds remain visible in The Plains. We have the records of the mound excavations to be able to tell you what was found inside of them. The tour will take us through the area that used to be inhabited by mounds with an explanation of Ohio prehistory using the original maps of the area. We will stop at the Plains for bathroom breaks and a look at the “schoolhouse” mound that now has a home on top of it. Next\, we will stop at the parking lot near the High school and walk over to a mound that is on private property near the Nature Conservancy land in The Plains. Finally\, We will visit the two largest remaining mounds off of Mounds St before returning to Solid Ground Farm. This tour helps to support Native Culture and Heritage in Ohio and Athens County.

SUMMARY:Opening: Forest and Form: Wood Sculpture by David Hostetler
DESCRIPTION:Forest and Form: Wood Sculpture by David Hostetler is a unique exhibition showcasing some of the late sculptor’s most important wood pieces\, created in Athens following his completion of a Master’s degree at Ohio University. It opens on Saturday\, April 18\, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hostetler Studios & Home (8089 N. Coolville Ridge Rd.\, Athens\, Ohio) and will remain on display through Spring 2027. \nLong before his work gained national attention\, David Hostetler was a foundational figure in Athens’ cultural life. A beloved and respected professor and founder of Art Park\, he helped shape the city’s creative identity for decades. His sculptures remain a visible part of the community\, with permanent works on Ohio University’s campus and at the Ohio University Inn. \nThe exhibition marks the first public showing of Bather (1961)\, Hostetler’s earliest full female figure and the foundational sculpture that launched his mature artistic voice. Alongside Bather\, the show features major wood carvings from the Hostetler personal collection\, including works that have never been exhibited in a gallery or museum setting. \nHostetler’s work was widely exhibited and written about during his lifetime\, with coverage in Ohio newspapers and magazines beginning in the late 1960s\, including outlets in Columbus\, Cincinnati\, Cleveland and Youngstown. \nVisitors will encounter an immersive installation designed to evoke a forest of carved forms\, with towering sculptures—some reaching up to ten feet tall—arranged as a living landscape of American hardwoods and exotic woods. Painted surfaces\, natural finishes and the raw presence of grain and scale reveal the evolution of Hostetler’s iconic female archetype across a 69-year sculpting career. \nHostetler’s work draws on a wide constellation of cultural influences\, including Native American petroglyphs\, ancient Goddess traditions and American folk art\, all distilled into a sculptural language that is both modern and timeless. This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to see these influences side by side in the material that shaped his earliest and most personal explorations: wood. \nIn addition to the sculptures\, the exhibition includes a curated selection of archival articles and features published throughout Hostetler’s life in Ohio and Nantucket media\, offering visitors deeper insight into the artist’s public reception and creative evolution. \nForest and Form opens the year-long centennial celebration\, David Hostetler: A Century of Form and Spirit\, honoring the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth. \nThe exhibition is free and open to the public and will remain on view through spring 2027. Private viewings are available by appointment\, and group tours are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:It’s playtime at The Nest!\n\nBreak the routine\, get out of the house and come let your little ones play in a fresh space while you get to talk with other grown-ups for awhile!\n\nCome and go as you please anytime during our open play hours.  Toys and activities are geared towards babies and toddlers but older siblings are welcome to come along.\n\nWhile you’re here\, peruse the lending library of books\, DVDs and even baby carriers free to borrow!\n\nTuesdays masks are optional\, while Thursdays are mask-only for those who prefer a “mask-on” environment.\n\nDisinfectant wipes are always available and we have a tub for toys that have been “mouthed” so they can be washed before future use.\n\nA changing table and toddler potty are available as well as a bottle warmer and fridge for storing formula/milk.

DESCRIPTION:Join us Wednesday\, April 22nd at 7:00 p.m. to celebrate Earth Day with a beautiful documentary that tells the story of two species whose lives are under threat of extinction in the French Pyrenees — the brown bear and the shepherd.\nAdmission is FREE – Tickets are required \nThis event will include a pre-show talk by Dr. Brooks Kohli of the OU Biological Sciences Department \nAbout the film \nIn this immersive film by British filmmaker Max Keegan\, we are transported to the mountains of southern France and the rugged environment where brown bears were hunted to extinction a quarter of a century ago\, largely because of the perception that the large\, predominantly vegetarian predators are lethal to the herds of sheep who graze the mountainsides. Through the efforts of conservationists\, however\, the bears have been slowly re-introduced to the area — against the wishes of the few shepherds who still ply their trade in the region. And so\, we meet Yves\, an aging sheep-herder who is struggling to train a young woman about his traditional way of life before he becomes too elderly to maintain his flock. Yves is staunchly against the return of the bears because he sees them as an primary threat to his livelihood. \nGorgeously-shot and insightful\, The Shepherd and The Bear is an unforgettable film that reveals how the conflicting needs of Nature and Humankind can shape the past\, present\, and future of a land and its people.
