DESCRIPTION:The Cassatt Quartet performs at Ohio University’s Glidden Hall as part of their 40th anniversary season\, with a free concert featuring string quartets by Shostakovich and Dorothy Rudd Moore\, along with Brahms’s Piano Quintet in F Minor\, for which the quartet will be joined by pianist – and Ohio University piano faculty –  Emely Phelps. \n\n\nHailed for its “mighty rapport and relentless commitment\,” the Cassatt String Quartet has performed throughout the world for four decades\, with appearances at Alice Tully Hall and Weill Recital Hall; Tanglewood Music Center; the Kennedy Center; Théâtre des Champs-Élysées; Centro National de las Artes; Maeda Hall; and Beijing’s Central Conservatory. \n\n\nTheir 2024-2025 season includes a busy schedule of performances in the U.S. and internationally\, including an Italian tour alongside guitarist Eliot Fisk; recording the great quartet Modes by Dorothy Rudd Moore\, alongside other string quartets by Black American women; teaching residencies at major universities and conservatories; and\, in proud Cassatt Quartet fashion\, premieres of important commissions\, including a piano quintet by Victoria Bond and a new work for string quartet by Joan Tower\, to be premiered at Maverick Concerts in September 2025. \n\n\nThe members of the Cassatt Quartet are violinists Muneko Otani and Jennifer Leshnower; violist Emily Brandenburg; and cellist Gwen Krosnick. The Quartet is named for Mary Cassatt\, the great 19th- and 20th-century painter who – in addition to being the only American to exhibit in Paris alongside the Impressionists – did devoted\, lifelong work in support of women’s equality and right to vote.

DESCRIPTION:Alla Boara\, an Italian folk ensemble from Cleveland consisting of female vocalist\, percussion\, acoustic bass\, guitar\, trumpet/flugelhorn and accordion/piano\, will perform on Sunday\, February 16 at 3:00 p.m. in the Ohio University Southern Riffe Rotunda in Ironton. Admission is $15 with cash or check payable to the “Ironton Council for the Arts” at the performance. Ohio University Southern is handicap accessible. \nAlla Boara’s music is rooted in ancient\, regional Italian folk songs featuring several regional dialects. Some are lively and celebratory\, others are somber and wistful\, still others are playful and funny\, but all are impassioned. It is storytelling through song of the daily lives of these pre-industrial Italian peoples. Anthony Taddeo\, percussionist and ensemble founder\, has reimagined and modernized these beautiful songs into a rich musical tapestry combining folk\, ballad and jazz musical flavors.

DESCRIPTION:Lyceum Luncheon Speaker Series Starts back up for 2025 \nThe Southeast Ohio History Center is restarting it Lyceum Luncheon Speaker Series for 2025 with a presentation of the iron furnaces of Southeast Ohio on Thursday\, February 20 at noon. Tom O’Grady\, from the History Center\, will kick off the brown bag speaker series with a presentation entitled Stone Pyramids of Southeast Ohio Forests: Iron Furnaces Helped Build America. \nMore than 60 iron furnaces were built between the Ohio River and Hocking County in the Hanging Rock Region of Ohio. Small towns grew up around the iron furnaces while the forests disappeared. Few remnants of this important industry survive into the 21st century. \nThe Lyceum Luncheon speaker series is held at the History Center on the third Thursday each month at noon.
