SUMMARY:Discovering History Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Land Hunger: Ohio and the Western Frontiers\nIn his talk\, Mansel G. Blackford will explore how notions and realities of land use were central to the experiences of Native Americans\, African Americans\, and Euro Americans living in the Ohio Country over several centuries. Moreover\, Blackford will examine how Ohioans (and others) sought to transfer knowledge gained in the Midwest to two other regions\, the Oregon Country and the Great Plains–with only partial success. Throughout\, the talk’s emphasis will be on men and women coming to grips with environments new to them by looking at how they lived in frontier times. The talk will\, thus\, address questions of importance to anyone interested in relationships between people and their environments: Above all\, how did ideas about the environment\, especially conceptions about water and land\, shape actions; and what have been the consequences of those actions down to the present day? Questions like these are relevant to us today\, as we grapple with the many environmental challenges resulting from climate changes. \nMansel G. Blackford is a professor emeritus of history at the Ohio State University\, where he worked in the fields of business history and frontier history for forty years. He is the author or coauthor of a dozen books\, several of which deal specifically with Ohio and midwestern history—most recently Land Hunger: Ohio and the Western Frontiers (Athens: Ohio University Press\, 2025). \nBlackford’s talk will be based on his just-published book Land Hunger: Ohio and the Western Frontiers (Athens: Ohio University Press\, 2025)\, which is available for sale in our Museum Gift Shop. \nThis event is sponsored by the Washington County Public Library\, and is FREE and open to the public.

SUMMARY:ABC Players and the Hocking Valley Scenic Railway team up for a 'killer' collaboration
DESCRIPTION:Something suspicious is happening on the rails in the Hocking Valley — and you might just get swept into the mystery before you even board the train. \nFor one day only\, on Saturday\, Sept. 6\, passengers on the 1 p.m. Hocking Valley Scenic Railway ride will be welcomed at the Nelsonville depot by live characters from ABC Players’ upcoming production of Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express.” \nPlease note: The characters will not be aboard the train. The interactive experience takes place only at the depot\, prior to departure. \nStarting at noon\, guests will have the chance to meet the famous detective Hercule Poirot and a host of suspicious personalities — each with secrets to hide and possibly a motive to kill. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the characters\, snap photos\, and enjoy this rare collaboration between two of Nelsonville’s most beloved cultural institutions. \nThe event precedes the 1 p.m. East Logan Round Trip\, a family-friendly\, 22-mile journey that lasts approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. The vintage train winds along a 156-year-old route\, offering scenic views of the Hocking River\, glimpses of Lock No. 19 from the old Hocking Canal\, and local industry sites. \nAdapted by Ken Ludwig\, “Murder on the Orient Express” follows the brilliant detective Poirot as he solves a chilling murder aboard a glamorous train filled with secrets and suspects. Expect vintage costumes\, dramatic twists\, and edge-of-your-seat suspense. \nWhile the train ride itself remains character-free\, this special pre-boarding event offers a fun taste of mystery and theater – with a scenic twist. Grab your ticket\, enjoy the show at the depot then sit back and relax on one of Ohio’s most historic train rides. \nTickets for “Murder on the Orient Express” are available now at: \nhttps://www.tixr.com/groups/stuartsoperahouse \nTickets for the Sept. 6 train ride and other excursions: \nhttps://www.hvsry.org/train-rides/east-logan-historic-train-ride
