SUMMARY:Athens 'Summer of Heat' Climate Ribbon Project event
DESCRIPTION:(For more info about this planned event contact Carrie Gibbons\, Third Act Ohio Coordinating Committee member\, 513-543-8770) \nJoin us for a SUMMER OF HEAT Action in Athens: \nWhen: July 10th\, 11:30am to 1:00pm \nWhere: At the Athens County Courthouse and Chase Bank \nWhy: We refuse to stay silent while JPMorgan Chase\, still the #1 investor of fossil fuel in the world since the Paris Climate Accords\, pumped another $40.8 Billion dollars into fossil fuel companies in 2023.  This is supercharging the climate emergency! \nAlso\, join us for an interactive art activity\, the Climate Ribbon Project\, which allows us to grieve what each of us stands to lose to Climate Chaos\, and affirms our solidarity as we unite to fight against it. \nPlease come join what promises to be an informative and lively event.  Meet other Ohio Third Actors\, and help get the message to Chase Bank that Ohioans say: \nNO! to funding of fossil fuels \nNO! to stealing our children’s and grandchildren’s futures \nYES! to a total pivot to funding for (true!) renewables. \nThis “Elders Week” event is part of the Summer of Heat campaign’s national effort from Climate Defenders\, and co-sponsored by Third Act and other organizations. \nThe “Summer of Heat” campaign\, which kicked off in NYC June 10th\, is turning up the heat on the issue of banking our economies on fossil fuels and petrochemicals. The campaign’s demands are not new but they remain crucial if the world is to limit global warming to 1.5°C. \nMade up of a large coalition of groups and organizations from all around the country\, this campaign is organizing protests all summer long in order to voice\, loud and clear\, these critical demands: that Wall Street banks and corporations halt their financing/insuring of fossil fuel expansion and increase\, exponentially (6X current levels)\, their investments in renewable energy projects – while respecting the rights of frontline communities and the sovereignty of indigenous groups impacted by these projects. \nFurther\, as stated on SummerOfHeat.org’s website\, “Wall Street must acknowledge its role in fueling climate chaos and environmental racism around the world and pay into a climate reparations fund\, such as the UNFCCC’s Loss and Damage Fund.” \nAccording to  the 2024 Banking on Climate Chaos report: “The world’s 60 biggest banks committed $6\,900\,000\,000\,000 over 8 years to the fossil fuel industry [since the Paris climate accords]\, driving climate chaos & causing deadly local community impacts.” Chase invested another $40.8 billion in FF expansion during 2023. \nThe clarion call for “Planet over Profit!” is ringing out everywhere this summer… \nThird Act is one of the many organizations involved in this summer long campaign. This week in the campaign is titled “Elders Week”. Third Act Ohio’s 4 climate events this week include: Cleveland (July 8)\, Columbus (July 9)\, Athens (July 10) and Cincinnati (July 10\, evening).

SUMMARY:The Underground Railroad in Ohio
DESCRIPTION:The public is invited to a Summer Lecture series event hosted by the Ross County Historical Society. Author and native Ohioan Kathy Schulz will be reading from her new book\, The Underground Railroad in Ohio.  The event will take place Saturday\, July 13 at 7:30 on the grounds of the Ross County Heritage Center located at 45 West Fifth Street in Chillicothe.\nThis event is free and open to the public. \nDuring a dark time in our history\, thousands of freedom seekers traveled the Underground Railroad through Ohio. The Buckeye State hosted about half of all fugitive slave traffic of the antebellum era. A mix of Northern and Southern settlers in the state added drama to a struggle that led to major benefits for the state and the country. Unfortunately\, this epic past was obscured by silence and secrecy and then distorted with misinformation and folklore—until now. Author and native Ohioan Kathy Schulz accurately details the development and workings of Ohio’s Underground Railroad with true stories of Addison White\, John Parker and others. \nKathy Schulz is a retired college librarian (Wittenberg University). A native of NE Ohio\, she has deep roots in the state and degrees from three of its universities. She lived at two major Underground Railroad junctions and wants Americans to know that the Underground Railroad was mostly in Ohio and mostly above ground—not in tunnels! \nKathy holds a B.S. in Education from Ohio State\, an M.L.S. from Kent State\, and an M. Hum. from Wright State. She regards herself as a “soldier in the information revolution” from her library days\, though she discovered fascinating information about anti-slavery activity the old-style way: from yellowed papers in library archives. Kathy and her husband currently live in Santa Fe NM\, where she stays busy with friends\, hobbies\, and grandchildren.

SUMMARY:Ohio Brew Week Clam Bake & Wandering Monsters Collab Release!
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a night of New England tradition\, seafood\, and great beer too\, as we serve up an outdoors-cooked clambake\, and also release a new beer! \nThe clambake will feature clams\, mussels\, house-smoked sausage\, corn\, and potatoes\, for $25 (all you can eat\, until we run out). We will also run our standard menu at the same time. \nThe beer we brewed with our friends from Wandering Monsters Brewing is a 100% Ohio-grown\, dry hopped pilsner called “Rustic Auburn Valley”. This is a chance to try a beer brewed with some of the best ingredients grown and processed by small farmers in Ohio (Pilsner malt from Rustic Brew Farm\, Comet hops from Auburn Acres\, and Crystal hops from Ohio Valley Hops). The WM folks will be hanging out with us too\, so make sure and say hi! \nBONUS! We’re also tapping two other beers from Wandering Monsters — exact varieties to be announced\, but they are going to be a lot of fun and feature some real off-the-wall ingredient combinations. \nDon’t miss it!
