SUMMARY:Appalatin presented by Ironton Council for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:The Ironton Council for the Arts concert season opens with Appalatin\, a Louisville band that blends Appalachian folk with high-energy Latin music. The sound comes from an unlikely meeting: Kentucky-raised musicians alongside players from Ecuador\, Nicaragua\, and Guatemala. Their all-acoustic instruments include guitar\, mandolin\, upright bass\, charango\, Andean flutes\, hand percussion\, and harmonica\, all wrapped in vocal harmonies. \nThe band has come a long way from its start in 2006\, when a weekly coffee shop gig paid in free coffee. Since then they’ve shared stages with Sam Bush\, Claire Lynch\, and Ben Sollee\, played festivals across the region\, and performed for a crowd of more than 10\,000 at the Dalai Lama’s public talk in Louisville. They’ve been featured on West Virginia Public Radio’s “Inside Appalachia” and are the subject of an Emmy-nominated PBS documentary. In 2026\, Appalatin celebrates its 20th anniversary. \nAdmission is $15\, free for students of all ages. This is the first of six concerts in the Ironton Council for the Arts’ 46th season. A full season subscription is just $50. We hope you’ll join us for a year of great music.

SUMMARY:Discovering History with Ryan Cole
DESCRIPTION:Rise and Fall of a Revolutionary Hero: The Tragic Life of Light-Horse Harry Lee \nIf you think the Founding Fathers were all boring old men in powdered wigs\, you haven’t met Henry Lee III—better known to history as “Light-Horse Harry” Lee. While today he is best remembered as the father of Confederate General Robert E. Lee\, Light-Horse Harry was once a powerhouse in his own right. He was a daring cavalry hero of the Revolutionary War\, a protégé of George Washington\, a close ally of Alexander Hamilton\, and a bitter nemesis to Thomas Jefferson. As a fearless soldier\, he helped America win its freedom; as a politician\, he helped shape its brand-new government. Born into one of Virginia’s most elite families\, the brilliant and talented Lee seemed destined for permanent greatness. Instead\, a series of disastrous financial decisions bankrupted his family\, landed him in a debtor’s prison\, and forced him to spend his final years wandering the Caribbean in lonely exile. Join author Ryan Cole as he brings to life the tragic\, compelling\, and deeply important story of a forgotten American icon. \nRyan L. Cole is the author of The Last Adieu: Lafayette’s Triumphant Return\, the Echoes of Revolution\, and the Gratitude of the Republic and Light-Horse Harry Lee: Rise and Fall of a Revolutionary Hero. His writing has appeared in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal\, his presentations have been featured on C-SPAN\, and he has spoken at historic venues including George Washington’s Mount Vernon and the Library of Congress. \nThis event is sponsored by the Washington County Library\, is FREE and open to the public\, and will be livestreamed/recorded on our YouTube Channel @CampusMartiusMuseum

SUMMARY:Discovering History: Justified Secession: When Is Leaving The Right Thing To Do?
DESCRIPTION:Secession is never easy\, and should never be undertaken lightly; previous secession movements have led to instability\, hardship\, and sometimes violence. Nonetheless\, secession is bound up with the ideals of self-determination and the liberal commitment to rule by the consent of the governed. It is the underlying moral legitimacy of arguments regarding self-determination that often undergird secessionist movements since\, as this book argues\, secession can be morally justified. The difficulty is determining when and how it is justified. My book offers an account that begins with the metaphysical nature of social relations at the root of self-determination. This account reveals that while the ideal of self-determination grants secession a moral grounding\, those same ideals of self-determination require a process that is deliberate and accounts for cross-cutting obligations. \nMitchell Krumm is Associate Professor of Political Science\, Public Law\, and Political Theory at Marietta College. He earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from Indiana University in 2016 in the fields of Political Theory and American Politics. He also earned a graduate minor in Philosophy. His dissertation was titled “Legitimate Secession: Self-Determination\, Liberalism\, and the Consent of the Governed.” Since earning his Ph.D. he has been an Assistant Professor at Bethel University in St. Paul and at University of South Carolina Aiken. He has been employed at Marietta College since 2023 where he earned tenure and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2024. His first book is titled “Justified Secession: When Is Leaving The Right Thing To Do?” and he is currently working on projects related to the role of Montesquieu in the Federalist/Anti-Federalist debates\, Edmund Burke\, and Friedrich Schiller. He has taught 20 distinct classes since his first class as instructor of record at IU in 2011. His service includes a wide range of department and institution level committees including chairing Faculty Development at Bethel\, chairing General Education at USCA\, and serving on Faculty Council and Curriculum Committee at Marietta College. He also has held other major roles including Pre-Law Advisor\, Moot Court Coach\, and Director of the Honors Program. SUMMARY:Discovering History: Women on the Midwestern Frontier
DESCRIPTION:According to historian Frederick Jackson Turner in his famous “Frontier Thesis” (1893)\, the frontier experience was the most significant development in United States history. Yet\, all the frontier “types” he discussed in his thesis were settler men: fur traders\, miners\, cattle raisers\, and farmers. Women\, both settlers and Indigenous\, were absent in Turner’s analysis. Using as a case study the Midwest during its frontier period (approximately 1780-1870)\, this presentation will place women at the center of the frontier story. While focusing primarily on settler women\, the presentation will also note the experiences of Indigenous women in the region. \nKatherine Jellison is Professor Emerita of History at Ohio University. Her most recent books are Amish Women in the Great Depression (with Steven D. Reschly\, 2023); Ohio’s First Ladies: From the Midwest to the White House (editor\, 2026); and Gender and Sexuality in the Midwest: Historical Perspectives (editor\, 2027). \nThis event is sponsored by the Washington County Library\, is FREE and open to the public\, and will be livestreamed/recorded on our YouTube Channel @CampusMartiusMuseum.
