SUMMARY:Teaching American History Seminar: Westward Expansion to Civil War
DESCRIPTION:This elementary school teacher focused seminar will explore documents on the expansion of the United States after the founding\, including the impact of the Northwest Ordinance. Teachers will be asked to look at how westward expansion furthered tensions with Native Americans and the issue on slavery as the nation moved toward the Civil War. \nThis program will be conducted as a discussion\, utilizing primary source documents as the only readings\, and with the Discussion Leader facilitating the conversation\, instead of lecturing or presenting. Registrants\, therefore\, are highly encouraged to read all the documents in advance and come ready with questions. All attendees will receive a Letter of Attendance at the end of the seminar. \nReading materials and agenda are available at https://drive.google.com/drive/u/0/folders/1yO9GkF-qM_GW8q-Ax2AQTWtq_dUJIaK4 \nLink to Register: https://info.teachingamericanhistory.org/01/marietta/oh/1of1/2026-09-26

SUMMARY:Appalatin presented by Ironton Council for the Arts
DESCRIPTION:The Ironton Council for the Arts concert season opens with Appalatin\, a Louisville band that blends Appalachian folk with high-energy Latin music. The sound comes from an unlikely meeting: Kentucky-raised musicians alongside players from Ecuador\, Nicaragua\, and Guatemala. Their all-acoustic instruments include guitar\, mandolin\, upright bass\, charango\, Andean flutes\, hand percussion\, and harmonica\, all wrapped in vocal harmonies. \nThe band has come a long way from its start in 2006\, when a weekly coffee shop gig paid in free coffee. Since then they’ve shared stages with Sam Bush\, Claire Lynch\, and Ben Sollee\, played festivals across the region\, and performed for a crowd of more than 10\,000 at the Dalai Lama’s public talk in Louisville. They’ve been featured on West Virginia Public Radio’s “Inside Appalachia” and are the subject of an Emmy-nominated PBS documentary. In 2026\, Appalatin celebrates its 20th anniversary. \nAdmission is $15\, free for students of all ages. This is the first of six concerts in the Ironton Council for the Arts’ 46th season. A full season subscription is just $50. We hope you’ll join us for a year of great music.

SUMMARY:Discovering History with Ryan Cole
DESCRIPTION:Rise and Fall of a Revolutionary Hero: The Tragic Life of Light-Horse Harry Lee \nIf you think the Founding Fathers were all boring old men in powdered wigs\, you haven’t met Henry Lee III—better known to history as “Light-Horse Harry” Lee. While today he is best remembered as the father of Confederate General Robert E. Lee\, Light-Horse Harry was once a powerhouse in his own right. He was a daring cavalry hero of the Revolutionary War\, a protégé of George Washington\, a close ally of Alexander Hamilton\, and a bitter nemesis to Thomas Jefferson. As a fearless soldier\, he helped America win its freedom; as a politician\, he helped shape its brand-new government. Born into one of Virginia’s most elite families\, the brilliant and talented Lee seemed destined for permanent greatness. Instead\, a series of disastrous financial decisions bankrupted his family\, landed him in a debtor’s prison\, and forced him to spend his final years wandering the Caribbean in lonely exile. Join author Ryan Cole as he brings to life the tragic\, compelling\, and deeply important story of a forgotten American icon. \nRyan L. Cole is the author of The Last Adieu: Lafayette’s Triumphant Return\, the Echoes of Revolution\, and the Gratitude of the Republic and Light-Horse Harry Lee: Rise and Fall of a Revolutionary Hero. His writing has appeared in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal\, his presentations have been featured on C-SPAN\, and he has spoken at historic venues including George Washington’s Mount Vernon and the Library of Congress. \nThis event is sponsored by the Washington County Library\, is FREE and open to the public\, and will be livestreamed/recorded on our YouTube Channel @CampusMartiusMuseum
