DESCRIPTION:Throughout 2016 Camp Oty’Okwa will be hosting Free Community Hikes on its property. These hikes will take place one Saturday of each month. Participants of all ages will get the chance to explore some of the most beautiful land the Hocking Hills has to offer\, including hemlock forests\, sandstone gorges\, and much\, much more. \nAll hikes will be led by experienced Camp naturalists and staff members. Please bring environmentally friendly snacks\, reusable water bottles\, and binoculars. \nDuring the months of March\, June\, September\, and November\, Camp Oty’Okwa will also be inviting the community to come out before the hike to help clean and maintain our stretch of SR 374. Participants in the Adopt-a-Highway event will receive a light breakfast and lunch. SUMMARY:Ancient Earthworks Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:We’ll visit flat-topped pyramids that bear an uncanny resemblance to Aztec temples; walk down a sacred road more than 20 centuries old; and stand atop the Quadranou Mound where ancient astronomer-priests studied the movement of the sun\, moon and stars. \nWe’ll also explore enigmatic Mound Cemetery\, the final resting place of Revolutionary War Patriots\, and hear local myths of lost tribes\, refugees from Atlantis\, giants\, goblins and buried treasure as we walk through the lovely Victorian neighborhood that surrounds the mounds. \nThis tour is a fantastic opportunity to step way back in time. Over 2000 years old\, the earthworks in this area are an important key to Marietta’s past. \nAncient Earthworks departs from Mound Cemetery’s 5th Street gate (5th and Scammel Streets) at 1pm on September 10 and October 8. \n$15 for adults\, $10 for children under 12. \nTour duration is 2 hours. The distance covered is just over 1.5 miles. \nAlthough much of the Ancient Earthworks tour is over sidewalks\, we walk through the grass and over some uneven terrain when we visit the Quadranou Mound. Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.

SUMMARY:47th Annual Apple Butter Stirrin' Festival
DESCRIPTION:Now in its 47th year\, the Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival attracts crowds of all ages to experience the sights\, sounds and flavors of the beautiful autumn season. The festival offers three days of family fun and a variety of entertainment. Over 100 craft and food vendors line the street\, displaying a number of handcrafted items and an assortment of mouth-watering foods. Visitors may sample the sweetness of homemade apple butter hand-stirred in a huge kettle over a wood fire and tap their feet to the tune of a variety of musical performances by traditional dulcimer players\, bluegrass bands\, country artists\, and gospel singers. \nAs part of their festival admission\, guests can go on The People…Our Stories tour to hear the fascinating stories of the costumed historical interpreters. Visitors may also meet historical characters while strolling through the festival and engage them in conversation. Throughout the weekend\, younger visitors can enjoy the kids’ activity area complete with tin punching\, various crafts\, and photo opportunities. A nearby canal boat offers a taste of life on the canal with its horse-drawn rides. On Friday and Saturday evening\, the eerie candlelight tour\, Spirit of Roscoe\, will be offered at 7:00pm at a cost of $9.95 for adults and $4.95 for students. On this tour\, guests can walk through the historic village while listening to tales of the spirited folk who once resided in this quaint canal town. Reservations are recommended for the candlelight tour. \nThe dates of the 47th Apple Butter Stirrin’ Festival are October 21st\, 22nd and 23rd. The festival runs from 10:00am to 6:00pm on Friday and Saturday\, and 10:00am to 5:00pm on Sunday. Admission tickets are $5.00 for visitors 12 years and older.
