Participants will be led to a series of vernal pools that are the host site for various amphibian’s nesting habitat. The ephemeral pools create a frenzy of activity that we will have the chance to explore with lead naturalist\, Joe Brehm. Learning about the species and their roles in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems will leave participants with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the complexity of our Appalachian forest.

DESCRIPTION:Time to let out your inner athlete and show the world what you’ve got! \nThe YMCA of Parkersburg’s Indoor Triathlon is a great event for newbies and seasoned veterans alike to compete in swimming\, biking\, and running (in our pool and on our stationary bikes and treadmills). Our triathlon is a modified version of a regular triathlon\, in which there are no fixed distances you must complete. Compete at the speeds you are comfortable with\, for as far a distance as you can within the fixed time periods. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTriathlon Details\nJunior\, Adult & Senior Divisions will be available for competitors: \n●     Junior Division: ages 12-17 \n●     Adult Division: ages 18-59 \n●     Senior Division: ages 60+ \nThe Triathlon will measure the distance traveled for each competitor within a 1-HR time span: \n●     10 min of lap swims in our 25-yard indoor pool. \n●     30 min of cycling on our stationary bikes. \n●     20 min of running on our treadmills. \nThe participant to travel the furthest distance within the fixed time periods will receive the most points. Each athlete will receive a score based on distances completed in each section\, plus an overall score for the ranking. Gold\, Silver\, and Bronze medals will be awarded to both males and females for each of the 3 divisions for a total of 18 medals. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nChoose your date & time.\nParticipants have the option to select the day and time they’d like to participate through online or in-person registration. To maintain social distancing\, each start time below will be limited to 4 people. \nSaturday\, March 12th: \n9:00 AM\, 10:00 AM\, 11:00 AM\, 1:00 PM\, 2:00 PM\, and 3:00 PM \nSunday\, March 13th:  \n1:00 PM\, 2:00 PM\, 3:00 PM \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTrain for the Triathlon.\nTo get ready for the Triathlon\, we recommend an 8-week training program\, which comes included in your registration for the Triathlon. DESCRIPTION:Discovery Summer STEAM Camp\n\nJoin the Ohio Valley Museum of Discovery for Summer Discovery Camp 2022!  \nWe have two weeks of camp in session at the Shade Community Center this year\, starting Tuesday\, July 5 through Saturday\, July 9 AND/OR Monday\, July 18 through Friday\, July 22. This half-day outdoor camp for rising 1st-6th graders will feature fun science experiments\, explorations of our local environment\, artistic expression\, local STEAM (science\, technology\, engineering\, arts\, & math) experts\, and more!  \nWhile we will be outside for camp\, we have access to the community center’s restroom facilities. All activities for camp will be outside\, rain or shine. Camp directors will contact caregivers in the event of inclement weather. \nArrival and sign-in daily from 8:30-9:00am. The experience will include making craft items to take home. When their “work” is done\, they will participate in popular outdoor children’s games from the 1800s. DESCRIPTION:The John Roger Simon Sorghum Festival returns to Scioto County October 1 & 2\, 2022 from 10am-4pm. After running for 37 years\, this annual festival was thought to be permanently retired in 2018\, but the non-profit organization\, the Arc of Appalachia is collaborating with the festival’s founder\, John Simon\, to bring it back! The festival features the making of sorghum syrup\, heritage craft demonstrations\, country food\, and musicians playing traditional live Appalachian music. The event will be held on Carey’s Run- Pond Creek Road\, just outside West Portsmouth. There are no entrance or parking fees – just bring cash for hot food and sweets!
