SUMMARY:Wolfe Plains Mounds Tour
DESCRIPTION:The Wolfe Plains Group is a Late Adena culture group of 30 earthworks including 22 conical mounds and nine circular enclosures\, originally known as Wolf’s Plains\, located a few miles to the northwest of Athens\, is a relatively flat terrace in an area of hilly terrain in southeastern Ohio’s Hocking River valley.  \nWe will meet at Solid Ground Farm a few miles away from The Plains to load the Rising Appalachia van. This is the third largest Adena mound complex after Chillicothe and Charleston\, WV.  Only three mounds remain visible in The Plains. We have the records of the mound excavations to be able to tell you what was found inside of them. The tour will take us through the area that used to be inhabited by mounds with an explanation of Ohio prehistory using the original maps of the area. We will stop at the Plains for bathroom breaks and a look at the “schoolhouse” mound that now has a home on top of it. Next\, we will stop at the parking lot near the High school and walk over to a mound that is on private property near the Nature Conservancy land in The Plains. Finally\, We will visit the two largest remaining mounds off of Mounds St before returning to Solid Ground Farm. This tour helps to support Native culture and heritage in Ohio and Athens County.

SUMMARY:Creating a Nelsonville City Council Ward Map: A Conversation
DESCRIPTION:PRESS ADVISORY \n  \nFor Immediate Release: May 9\, 2025 \n  \nLeague of Women Voters hosts Redistricting Town Halls for City of Nelsonville \n  \nContact: Trevor Martin\, 415.871.8750\, tmartin@lwvohio.org; Debbie Schmieding\, 740.517.1977\, athensleagueofwomenvoters@gmail.com  \n  \nNelsonville\, OH: The League of Women Voters will host the second in a series of town hall meetings for Nelsonville residents to learn about and participate in the creation of new ward maps for the Nelsonville City Council. The meetings are open to all\, because democracy works best when we all participate. This is your chance to help shape – literally! – the future of our community.  \n  \nWHAT: Town Hall on Nelsonville Redistricting \nWHEN: 6pm – 8pm Thursday\, May 29\, 2025  \nWHERE: Nelsonville Public Library \n95 W. Washington St\, Nelsonville\, OH 45764 \n  \nLast year\, the people of Nelsonville voted to abolish the city’s charter and go back to the general statutory form of government in place until 1994\, when the charter was adopted. That requires the city to be divided into four wards. \nThe current Council has opted to remain neutral in the ward-drawing process. To start creating these wards\, the City of Nelsonville formally requested the League of Women Voters of Ohio and League of Women Voters of Athens County to convene community meetings and propose a ward map for the City of Nelsonville based on that feedback. \nHelp sew the fabric of our democracy! Be a part of making our government work for everyone.
