SUMMARY:We Are Reopening Wednesday\, August 12!
DESCRIPTION:What an emotional ride these last few months have been. From all of us at the History Center\, we hope that you are continuing to stay safe and healthy. We have certainly missed seeing you and we are thrilled to be reopening our doors on Wednesday\, August 12th. We will offer special\, Members Only hours Wednesday through Saturday\, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM. We will be open to the general public Wednesday through Saturday\, from 12:30 to 3:30 PM. \nWhile we have been closed\, we have been working hard to transform the History Center. We have a new floor in our Great Hall\, and new exhibits for you to see! \nOur community has also experienced many changes since March. Many people are struggling with unemployment and uncertainty. Because we believe in the power of our past to shape and define our region’s future\, we want history to be accessible to everyone. For this reason\, we are proud to announce that we are reducing our admission rates. \nAdult admission is now $5; while tickets for students\, seniors\, and military personnel are $3. We also want to show our support for people who are working especially hard to serve our community\, so first responders\, healthcare workers\, and educators can also visit the History Center for the $3 discounted rate. Just show your ID badge at the front desk! Members and children under 12 are\, of course\, free! \nBe sure to visit our website for more information on what to expect when you visit the History Center. We’re looking forward to seeing all of you\, soon!

SUMMARY:Ride Through Time Bike Tour
DESCRIPTION:A local historian will lead cyclists on a 17.5- mile tour of historic coal towns during the Ride Through Time bike tour on May 15. \nDid you know a canal once linked Athens with Lancaster and ultimately\,  the Erie Canal? Lock No. 19 of the Hocking Canal System will be one of the stops on the tour\, and historian Ingrid Buckley will be present to tell participants about this and other historic attractions along the way. Buckley grew up in the hills of Appalachia and is a graduate of Wooster College\, where she studied history. \nThe tour\, sponsored by Rural Action and Ohio’s Winding Road\,  is noncompetitive and will follow scenic back roads through Athens County. Local refreshments will be provided along the way at points of interest\, and there will be opportunities to patronize local eateries and shops. Participants should anticipate a 1\,269-foot elevation gain with at 16.9% maximum grade. There also will be some gravel roads. \nThree guides will be present throughout the tour equipped with first-aid kits\, but this is a non-supported tour\, meaning participants should come prepared with personal bike repair kits and water. Helmets are required. \nParticipants will meet at Nelsonville Public Library\, 95 W. Washington St.\, at 9 a.m.on May 15  for the tour\, which will run until 1 p.m. Space is limited so register soon at the following URL: ruralaction.org/biketour/ \nRural Action is a regional community development organization with a 32-county footprint working with members and community leaders on a range of quality of life\, environmental\, and economic projects across rural Appalachian Ohio.
