DESCRIPTION:Enjoy a beautiful section of the Buckeye trail while taking part in your 1st or your 21st backpacking adventure. Participants will learn all necessary skills to complete a backpacking trip\, and will leave empowered to hit the trail again soon. This is a good first backpacking trip for people with hiking experiences or a regular fitness routine. It is also a fun time for people with backpack experiences to share the love of the trail with others. This is a fully supported course providing food\, rentable gear\, and hands-on instruction on all beginner topics. \nWeekend itinerary: \nFriday Sept. 30th \n\nMeet at Tecumseh Theater for gear shakedown at 6 PM. Expert backpacking guides will go over participants’ gear to ensure everyone is prepared for the adventure.\n\n\nDinner suggestions: Black Diamond Tavern\, Little Italy Pizza (to order)\n\n\nJoin the group for comradery around the fire behind the Buckeye Trail Association headquarters.\n\n\nLodging suggestions: Sleep in Tecumseh Theater (contact Scott @ 740-592-4106\, Burr Oak lodge/ Burr Oak camping\, Camping at Stone Church trail in Shawnee\n\nSaturday October 1st \n\nCheck in at Tecumseh Theater 8 AM\n\n\nA three to six mile backpacking route with a camping option at mile marker three at the Up Stream Rock Run Restoration Area. SUMMARY:Labor Union History and Local Holiday Shopping
DESCRIPTION:Our guided\, self-driven tour will begin at the Ora E. Anderson Nature Trail that is positioned atop the old railroad bed of the Hocking Valley Railway that served the coal mines surrounding Carbon Hill. As we walk along the scenic old railroad bed\, which is now a crushed limestone path we will see numerous remains of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century railroad line. \nThe group will then drive themselves a short ways into the town of Carbon Hill where they learn about the birthplace of the early labor organization. Tyler McDaniel will share stories about the people who founded the town and the leaders of the community who fought for workers rights such as Christopher Evans. \nThe tour will end in Nelsonville\, an 8 minute drive from Carbon Hill. Here we learn about the town’s history and connection to the labor movement. Participants are invited to visit the local shops and eateries for lunch and holiday shopping in the quaint town of Nelsonville.

We will hear stories about people of African descent who have played an integral part in the region’s development as we visit locations of historical significance. On this unique and insightful journey through Appalachian Ohio\, you will discover the historical and cultural gems even long-time residents might have yet to explore. \nThis weekend-long\, guided tour includes stops at two unique museums\, three meals by local and Black owned businesses\, a guided drum circle\, tour of a local maple syrup farm\, transportation and more! On this experience you will gain factual knowledge about the natural and cultural heritage of the region from local historians\, business owners\, and farmers that uplift the diversity of our community. Dinner reservations and a specialty menu are provided at Dutch Creek Winery along with an exclusive tour of their honey\, wine\, and mead production\, including a honey sampling. This is an all-inclusive tour aside from lodging (check out our list below for local lodging accommodations that will provide you a discount rate if you book this tour with us).

DESCRIPTION:A Ride Through Time Guided Bicycle Tour participants will enjoy 17.5 miles of the most beautiful back roads in Athens County\, while touring historic and natural sites along the way with a historic guide. Local refreshments will be provided and chances to patronize local eateries and shops will be available. \nThe tour will be a non competitive event allowing for ample time to take in the Appalachian scenery and learn more about the rich history. This route will twist through the hills and back roads of the county\, participants should anticipate 1\,269 feet elevation gain with at 16.9% max grade and some gravel roads. This is a non-supported tour\, meaning participants should come prepared with personal bike repair kits and water\, helmets are required. \nJoin us for a rich experience of connecting to Southeast Ohio by cycling through the Appalachian hills\, enjoying local foods\, and immersing yourself in the history of the region.

Pedal along the Hocking river to the Bluebell Preserve\, as we learn the names and stories of the wildflowers along the bike path. \nThis guided bike tour is unsupported so participants are responsible for their own bike repair kits and water supply. The tour will begin and end at the Athens Public Library. \n*Arrive early for free bike rentals through the library (available on a first-come\, first-served basis). DESCRIPTION:Join Appalachian Understories\, United Campus Ministry and Ohio University for a walking tour of uptown Athens and Ohio University exploring the history of the LGBTQ+ community in Southeast Ohio. Tour guide and former LGBT Center Director\, Mickey J Hart\, will share stories of the work he and many others have done for the civil rights of the LGBTQ+ community in Athens. Participants are invited to share their stories and perspective through out the event. \nThis tour will be a 1.5 mile walk on paved roads and sidewalks around uptown Athens with some hills. The tour begins and ends at United Campus Ministries with shuttles available to Richland Park to enjoy the Athens Pride Fest picnic hosted by the Southeastern Ohio Rainbow Alliance.
