DESCRIPTION:Want to get your brain and body moving and meet new friends? Scottish Country Dance is a social dance form a bit like contra\, but with more footwork. The name of the game is fun! \nThis nine-week class meets every Sunday at the Athens Community Center between October 15 and December 10. Each week we’ll be building on the previous week’s session\, so drop-ins aren’t possible. (However\, if you need to miss a couple of classes that aren’t back to back\, you’ll be fine.) \nStart at the very beginning then level up to become a strong intermediate dancer. We’ll learn jigs\, reels\, and strathspeys and students will become proficient at all the basic figures plus reels of three\, quick-time poussette\, and two-couple allemandes. \nWho is this for: You! This class will be perfect if you’ve never danced before\, if you’re a pro with patience\, or for anyone in the middle. No partner needed. All folks 18+ are welcome. Bands scheduled to perform include: Trimble\, Nelsonville-York\, River Valley\, Meigs\, Wellston\, Ravenswood\, Westfall\, Logan Elm\, Point Pleasant\, Warren Local\, Olentangy Liberty\, Pickerington Central\, Newark\, and Athens. The festival is sponsored by the Athens Band Boosters\, Kiwanis Club of Downtown Athens\, and Chauncey-Dover Lions. Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for children. DESCRIPTION:About the film \nAffable hillbillies Tucker and Dale are on vacation at their dilapidated mountain cabin when they are mistaken for murderers by a group of preppy college students. \nAbout the Speaker \nDr. Tiffany Arnold is an assistant professor of instruction in the College of Health Sciences and Professions where she coordinates the Appalachian Studies Undergraduate and Graduate Certificate Programs. Additionally\, she teaches Public Health and Environmental Health courses focused on Appalachian studies. \nOne of Dr. Arnold’s interests is the way that the Appalachian region is portrayed in films and in the media\, and she draws upon this interest to help others think critically about their own perceptions of the region and\, most importantly\, where these ideas come from. She will be discussing the common ways Appalachian culture appears in horror films and how the film “Tucker and Dale vs. Evil” contributes to or counteracts that narrative. \nAbout the series \nFollowing the success of the 2022-23 series\, we are excited to present the 2nd annual From the Hills and Hollers: Appalachian Stories Film Series. \nThe mission of the series is to connect Athens and the university community to the surrounding region by examining the different ways Appalachia has been represented through film. We seek to develop cultural competency and humility by showing viewers the way both the assets and challenges the region faces have been viewed by those who have the power to represent it on screen. \nShort introduction/lectures will provide context for the film and introduce the underlying issues represented in film and other media. All events in the series are presented with free admission.  \nThis screening will take place at the Ridges Auditorium located at 135 Ridges Circle. \nThis series is sponsored by the 2023 Appalachian Studies Association Conference\, Ohio Honors Program\, Center for Campus and Community Engagement\, Multicultural Center\, Black Student Cultural Programming Board\, Hocking Athens Perry Community Action Program\, Athens County Public Libraries\, University Libraries\, Honors Tutorial College\, Center for Advising\, Career\, and Experiential Learning\, OHIO Fellows\, and the Ohio Arts Council.
