DESCRIPTION:OHIO STATE OLD TIME FIDDLERS CONTEST \nFriday August 18 at 6 p.m. in the historic Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville\, OH. \nStuart’s Opera House is a beautifully restored opera house right on the Nelsonville Square. Stuart’s hosts numerous musical events that bring in people from near and far and provides musical programs and instructions for young people in the area. \nRegistration is available online by going to paradeofthehills.org/fiddlersparadeofthehills.org/fiddlers or you can regster when you arrive the day of the contest. There is no entry fee. \nCheck in will begin at 4 p.m. on the ground floor of the Opera House\, and the actual playing will begin at 6 p.m. Please come in through the gate on the Washington Street entrance. That’s just around the corner from the Opera House entrance on the Square. \nThe Public Square is off limits to traffic and parking can be difficult. The Presbyterian Church on Washington Street is just about a block from Stuart’s Opera House and is offering parking spots to fiddlers – first come\, first served. If you drive from quite a distance and want to spend the night\, hotels are available in Nelsonville\, Athens\, and Logan – just 15 minutes away on Route 33. \nTickets for those who would like to be in the audience are $10. \nWe hope to see you this summer at the Ohio State Old Time Fiddlers Competition. Have questions? call 740-591-7534. \nFiddlers compete in 4 age groups: 12 and under\, 13-18\, 19-54\, 55+. 13-18\, 19-54 and 55+ compete for 1st place – $300 and a plaque\, 2nd place – $200 and a medal; 3rd place – $100 and a medal. 12 and under complete for 1st place – $75 and a plaque\, 2nd place – $50 and a medal\, 3rd place $26 and a medal. Grand Champion – $300 and a plaque.

DESCRIPTION:Amanda Flowers will share her research into “Unwrapping the colonized mindset in America’s healthcare system: The medical exploitation and experimentation of African Americans”. \nDr. Flowers grew up in Cutler\, Ohio  and graduated from Warren High School. She majored in psychology\, minored in sociology\, and graduated cum laude as a McNair Scholar at Kent State University. She was awarded a graduate fellowship at the University of Cincinnati\, where she received her master’s and doctorate degrees in Clinical Psychology.  As part of her clinical internship\, Dr. Flowers participated in behavioral health research through Case Western Reserve University and was awarded a National Institute of Health postdoctoral fellowship to complete health diversity research at the Ohio State University. As a professional\, she has blended her clinical\, research\, and community outreach initiatives into a vision for advancing racial equity and justice in marginalized communities. Dr. Flowers is invested in combating the social determinants of health for Appalachians of Color through her grassroots collaborations with the Racial Equity Coalition of Athens County and Tablertown People of Color Museum in Kilvert.  As her pastime\, she participates in competitive dog sports and engages her canine companions in therapeutic and disaster stress relief programs.

Our meal includes a meat and vegetarian entrée\, several side dishes\, a mixed greens salad\, dessert\, and drinks. We are dedicated to serving the freshest and most nutritious meals possible. We rely on donations of fresh and non-perishable foods and local discounts to make our meals possible. Meals are prepared by volunteers who start 2.5 hours before the serving time (9:30 a.m.  – 12 p.m.).

SUMMARY:Organic No-Till and Alley Cropping Workshop at Woodcock Preserve
DESCRIPTION:The word about cover crops is reaching the public: these awesome plants enhance soil health\, crop yields\, weed control capabilities\, water quality\, and more. In practice\, however\, managing cover crops requires attention to complex factors such as species selection\, timing\, and termination. This workshop will specifically focus on small and medium-scale applications of cover crops with “organic no-till” principles–zero herbicides and minimal soil disturbance. We will review how tarps\, crimpers\, mowers\, and no-till planting techniques combine with multi-species cover crops for producing diverse food and market crops. We will participate in a hands-on demonstration on the use of a flail mower and an occultation tarp to terminate a cover crop\, and learn finer points of tarping technique and no-till planting. Please bring questions and ideas for applications of cover crops to your operation. Register through attached Eventbrite link.

DESCRIPTION:Ross County Historical Society invites children ages 6 to 12 to join us for our 2023 Summer Junior Member Program “Working on the Ohio & Erie Canal.” \nStep back in time to the days of Ohio’s first super highway—the Ohio & Erie Canal. \nChildren ages six to twelve are invited to participate in our 2023 Summer Junior Member Program where they will experience what life was like during Ohio’s canal era of the early 19th century. We will discover how the canal was built and who built it\, plus learn the skills of a canal boat captain\, a canal boat builder\, and a teamster who drove the horses and mules that pulled the boats along the canal. We will also tour the canal exhibit inside the museum.
