DESCRIPTION:Amanda Flowers will share her research into “Unwrapping the colonized mindset in America’s healthcare system: The medical exploitation and experimentation of African Americans”. \nDr. Flowers grew up in Cutler\, Ohio  and graduated from Warren High School. She majored in psychology\, minored in sociology\, and graduated cum laude as a McNair Scholar at Kent State University. She was awarded a graduate fellowship at the University of Cincinnati\, where she received her master’s and doctorate degrees in Clinical Psychology.  As part of her clinical internship\, Dr. Flowers participated in behavioral health research through Case Western Reserve University and was awarded a National Institute of Health postdoctoral fellowship to complete health diversity research at the Ohio State University. As a professional\, she has blended her clinical\, research\, and community outreach initiatives into a vision for advancing racial equity and justice in marginalized communities. Dr. Flowers is invested in combating the social determinants of health for Appalachians of Color through her grassroots collaborations with the Racial Equity Coalition of Athens County and Tablertown People of Color Museum in Kilvert.  As her pastime\, she participates in competitive dog sports and engages her canine companions in therapeutic and disaster stress relief programs.

DESCRIPTION:The word about cover crops is reaching the public: these awesome plants enhance soil health\, crop yields\, weed control capabilities\, water quality\, and more. In practice\, however\, managing cover crops requires attention to complex factors such as species selection\, timing\, and termination. This workshop will specifically focus on small and medium-scale applications of cover crops with “organic no-till” principles–zero herbicides and minimal soil disturbance. We will review how tarps\, crimpers\, mowers\, and no-till planting techniques combine with multi-species cover crops for producing diverse food and market crops. We will participate in a hands-on demonstration on the use of a flail mower and an occultation tarp to terminate a cover crop\, and learn finer points of tarping technique and no-till planting. Difficult questions are encouraged and answered! \nThe Human Library is an organization that has been around for 23 years and based out of Copenhagen\, Denmark. They have several publishing partners around the world\, and we’re so excited to be one of them! \nHow does the Human Library work? The Human Library is a library of people. Readers can borrow human beings serving as “Books” and will be able to engage in interesting conversations on a variety of topics in a safe space where curiosity & understanding are at the heart of the event. All of our human books are volunteers with personal experience with their topic. Each reading with a Book will last roughly 30 minutes each. \nWhat topics will the Books discuss? In the past\, the Human Library has hosted a variety of Books such as “Recovering Alcoholic\, Blind\, Native American\, Adopted\, Intersex\, Epileptic\, Environmental Activist\, Refugee\, Bipolar\, Autism\, Jewish\, Politician\, Victim of Stalking” and over a hundred more topics from all over the world! We can’t announce beforehand what specific topics/titles we’ll have at this event\, but we’ll have several to choose from!
