The Portsmouth Wind Symphony recently completed its 30th performing season dedicated to continuing to offer more challenging classical repertoire while broadening the orchestra’s appeal through more “pops” programming.

DESCRIPTION:Sung in Spanish and inspired by the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez\, Mexican composer Daniel Catán’s 1996 opera tells the enchanting story of a Brazilian opera diva who returns to her homeland to perform at the legendary opera house of Manaus—and to search for her lost lover\, who has vanished into the jungle. The December 9 performance stars soprano Ailyn Pérez as Florencia Grimaldi\, with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium to lead a spellbinding new production by Mary Zimmerman that brings the mysterious and magical realm of the Amazon to the Met stage. A distinguished ensemble of artists portray the diva’s fellow travelers on the river boat to Manaus\, including soprano Gabriella Reyes as the journalist Rosalba\, bass-baritone Greer Grimsley as the ship’s captain\, baritone Mattia Olivieri as his enigmatic first mate\, tenor Mario Chang as the captain’s nephew Arcadio\, and mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera and baritone Michael Chioldi as the feuding couple Paula and Álvaro. \nDue to the current repairs going on at the Athena Cinema\, this program will be presented as a pre-recorded encore at the Ridges Auditorium. DESCRIPTION:Regional histories cannot survive without the work of dedicated individuals who seek to document and preserve both past and present. Local resident and historian William E. Peters (1857-1952) is prominent among those who have contributed to such efforts in southeast Ohio. His legacy includes one of the most comprehensive records of Athens County history. This presentation will introduce the life and legacy of W. E. Peters. Erin Wilson from the Mahn Center for Archives and Special Collections will join us and describe recent work with the Peters collection which includes digitization\, crowdsourced transcription and the development of an interactive map. DESCRIPTION:Join Rural Action\, Appalachian Ohio Restore Corps\, ODNR’s Ohio Outdoor Corps and ServeOhio on Saturday\, January 20\, 2024 from 9am-4pm at The People of Color Museum in Tablertown!  If interested in volunteering\, please sign up here by the evening of Monday\, January 15\, as space is limited.  There are four different shifts and volunteers can sign up for as many as they want.  Read on for more details! \nIn this event\, volunteers will be able to learn about the history of the Tablertown and continue to reflect on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.\, while helping with a variety of activities around the area such as cleaning out the building of the new museum site\, assisting with cleaning up the cemetery and beautifying the existing museum’s site.  All equipment will be provided the day of. We will have a warming station and we recommend wearing close-toed shoes. Dress for the weather as most activities will take place outside.   \nCan’t be there that day? Sign up for a ‘virtual’ volunteering opportunity! In honor of community coming together\, we will be having a structured potluck.
