DESCRIPTION:Regional histories cannot survive without the work of dedicated individuals who seek to document and preserve both past and present. Local resident and historian William E. Peters (1857-1952) is prominent among those who have contributed to such efforts in southeast Ohio. His legacy includes one of the most comprehensive records of Athens County history. This presentation will introduce the life and legacy of W. E. Peters. Erin Wilson from the Mahn Center for Archives and Special Collections will join us and describe recent work with the Peters collection which includes digitization\, crowdsourced transcription and the development of an interactive map. DESCRIPTION:Join Rural Action\, Appalachian Ohio Restore Corps\, ODNR’s Ohio Outdoor Corps and ServeOhio on Saturday\, January 20\, 2024 from 9am-4pm at The People of Color Museum in Tablertown!  If interested in volunteering\, please sign up here by the evening of Monday\, January 15\, as space is limited.  There are four different shifts and volunteers can sign up for as many as they want.  Read on for more details! \nIn this event\, volunteers will be able to learn about the history of the Tablertown and continue to reflect on the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.\, while helping with a variety of activities around the area such as cleaning out the building of the new museum site\, assisting with cleaning up the cemetery and beautifying the existing museum’s site.  All equipment will be provided the day of. We will have a warming station and we recommend wearing close-toed shoes. Dress for the weather as most activities will take place outside.   \nCan’t be there that day? DESCRIPTION:Join us at 3 p.m. on February 4 in OHIO Southern’s Bowman Auditorium for a performance by Appalachian Storyteller Adam Booth.\nTickets are $15 and available at the door. Admission is free for students.\nAdam Booth is the 2022 West Virginia Folk Artist of the Year\, awarded at the Governor’s Arts Awards. Adam blends traditional mountain folklore\, music\, and an awareness of contemporary Appalachia to create original\, forward-thinking story artistry. Adam’s new multidisciplinary program The Heron’s Journey has been selected for the 2024-2025 Mid Atlantic Arts Touring Roster. As a nationally touring artist\, his professional telling appearances include premiere storytelling events across the United States\, including the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage\, the International Storytelling Center\, the National Storytelling Festival\, the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival\, the Appalachian Studies Association Conference\, the National Storytelling Conference\, the National Academy of Medicine\, and as a Spoken Word Resident at the Banff Centre (Alberta\, Canada). He is a member of the Recording Academy and his recordings have received many national honors\, including a Parents’ Choice Gold Award. Adam serves as the inaugural Storyteller-In-Residence at Shepherd University and is the founding artistic director of Speak Story Series\, a premier destination for storytelling in concert.
