SUMMARY:Heroes In Color: BLADE
DESCRIPTION:Say hello to Blade. He’s equal parts human and vampire\, with all the supernatural attributes of his blood-thirsty brethren but with none of their vulnerabilities. This makes him the ultimate vampire hunter! It’s a good thing too\, because Los Angeles is set to become ground zero for the onset of war between the fanged and the un-fanged. But\, there’s in-fighting within the ranks of the blood-suckers between elders and fledglings\, giving Blade the opportunity he needs to put a stop to the nefarious plans of the council of pure-blood vampires. \nThe film that launched the Marvel MCU franchise\, BLADE is a superhero film that will surely get your blood to rise! \nEach show will feature added content such as trivia\, introductions\, raffles\, themed drinks and more! \nSeating and pre-show activities at 7:00 p.m.\, film start time 7:30 p.m. \nAbout the series \nThe mission of this film series is to synergize education and entertainment\, creating a unique experience for our community. At the heart of the Heroes in Color film series lies a commitment to celebrate voices and stories of people of color that have traditionally been marginalized within popular culture. By showcasing a kaleidoscope of cinematic heroes who reflect the spectrum of human stories\, backgrounds\, and aspirations\, we strive to redefine heroism\, proving that anyone\, regardless of their origin\, can rise to greatness. \nClick here to view the other films coming to this year’s Heroes In Color series. \nSponsored by Ohio University Division of Diversity & Inclusion\, Division of Student Affairs\, Office of Global Affairs\, Ohio Men of Excellence Network and Ohio Arts Council

SUMMARY:The Met: Live in HD: Bizet’s CARMEN
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed English director Carrie Cracknell brings a vital new production of one of opera’s most enduringly powerful works\, reinvigorating the classic story with a staging that moves the action to the modern day and finds at the heart of the drama issues that could not be more relevant today: gendered violence\, abusive labor structures\, and the desire to break through societal boundaries. Dazzling young mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina leads a powerhouse quartet of stars in the complex and volatile title role\, alongside tenor Piotr Beczała as Carmen’s troubled lover Don José\, soprano Angel Blue as the loyal Micaëla\, and bass-baritone Kyle Ketelsen as the swaggering Escamillo. Daniele Rustioni conducts Bizet’s heart-pounding score. \nDue to the current repairs going on at the Athena Cinema\, this program will be presented as a pre-recorded encore at the Ridges Auditorium. This screening starts at 12:55pm and is estimated to end at 4:39pm. \nAdmission $20 (senior $18\, children $8) \nOHIO Student: Free \nThanks to Arts for OHIO\, we are able to offer a limited number of FREE student tickets available on first-come\, first-serve basis. Must have valid student I.D. \nClick here to view the rest of the Met: Live in HD schedule. \nSpecial thanks to George Weckman and the following supporters: \nOhio Performing Arts & Film \nArts for Ohio \nCollege of Fine Arts \nOhio Arts Council

SUMMARY:Author Ron Luce speaks on new book\, 'The Millfield Mine Disaster' at Little Professor
DESCRIPTION:Millfield Mine Disaster Revisited \nIn his new book (January 2024)\, The Millfield Mine Disaster\, Ron Luce\, former Director of the Athens County Historical Society and Museum\, tells the history of the original Poston Mine No. 6 and its subsequent status as Sunday Creek Coal Company Mine No. 6. Ohio’s worst mine disaster occurred at this mine on Wednesday\, November 5\, 1930\, resulting in the deaths of 82 men (including the president and other leaders of the Sunday Creek Coal Company). \nLuce carefully explores the history of the mine itself and then provides details about the 1930 disaster as documented by experts from the Ohio Bureau of Mines and the US Mine Bureau. Additionally\, he provides information about the people involved\, including names and personal information about the men who died. \nPublished by History Press\, the book explores not only what happened on that fateful day\, but how and why 82 men died\, 56 women became widows\, and 137 dependents became fatherless in an instant. This book pulls together all of the facts for the first time to tell what occurred when a major corporation put profit ahead of worker safety. \n“I wrote this book to get past ninety-four years of misinformation about what happened\, to honor and correctly identify the men who died\, and to provide the public with documentation that has not been widely shared\,” Luce said. \nOn Saturday\, February 10th\, Luce will be at The Little Professor Book Center from 2 to 5 p.m. to sign copies of the book and provide a short presentation. \nThe Millfield Mine Disaster is available in bookstores and online.
