SUMMARY:Greater Huntington Symphonic and Jazz Bands Christmas Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Greater Huntington Symphonic and Jazz Bands will perform their annual free Christmas concert on Sunday\, December 22 at 4:00 p.m. in the Spring Valley High School auditorium. The jazz band is directed by Mr. Tom Chaffin and the symphonic band is directed by Mr. Matt Chaffins. \nThe symphonic band consists of approximately 50 members performing on various wind\, brass\, and percussion instruments. They perform standard concert band arrangements representing multiple styles and genres. The jazz band has approximately 25 members\, all of whom are members of the symphonic band\, and performs standard jazz\, big band\, and jazz rock arrangements. Both groups typically perform four concerts per year throughout the tri-state including a spring concert\, the annual July patriotic concert in Ironton\, a fall pops concert\, and a Christmas concert.

DESCRIPTION:The Federal Valley Resource Center will host Bruce and Gay Dalzell as they usher in the holiday season with their annual Christmas Show at 7:00.  At 5:30 join us for a spaghetti dinner and  Santa’s annual stop at FVRC.  These events are free\, but donations are always welcome.  The Thrift Store will also be open till 7:00.  The Federal Valley Resource Center is handicap accessable and all are welcome.

DESCRIPTION:Musicians from all over the region will be gathering on Saturday\, December 14 at the historic Ariel Opera House in Gallipolis\, Ohio for the 12th annual Ariel Merry TubaChristmas. This 2 p.m. concert is part of a nationwide celebration of low brass music created by Harvey Phillips. Now in its 51st year\, Merry TubaChristmas is presented in over 250 cities throughout the United States and in several foreign countries. In an unusual turn of events\, the concert itself is free to everyone but the participants pay to perform as per the request of Phillips himself to provide funding to continue the tradition throughout the country.\n\nPhillips was inspired to create TubaChristmas as an annual event honoring his teacher\, the late great tubist William J. Bell who was born on Christmas day in 1902. Every Christmas season\, tuba and euphonium players of all ages gather to pay respect to all the great artists and teachers who represent their heritage. Every TubaChristmas performance features traditional Christmas carols especially arranged for low brass by American composer Alec Wilder who died on Christmas Eve 1980. Through Wilder\, TubaChristmas concerts pay grateful tribute to composers who have embraced these noble instruments with solo and ensemble compositions.\n\nTubaChristmas ensembles attract players from 8 to 80. The warm\, rich\, organ-like sound of the tuba-euphonium choir has won over the ears and hearts of every audience. It is no wonder that TubaChristmas has become an established Christmas tradition in cities throughout the world.\n\nNo tickets are needed for this free event at the Ariel located at 426 Second Ave. in downtown Gallipolis\, Ohio. DESCRIPTION:Athens\, OH–Factory Street Studio (FSS) is excited to announce that the 2024 Winter Dance Celebration Concert will be on Friday\, December 13th at 7:00 pm and Saturday\, December 14th at 2:00pm at Ohio University’s Putnam Hall. FSS is a non-profit dance studio that started in 1978 that provides non-competitive dance education in Southeast Ohio\, promoting dance technique\, self-esteem\, personal growth and a cooperative spirit.  \n  \nFactory Street Studio would like to invite our families\, friends\, alumni and community members to join us as we celebrate the hard work and dedication of our dancers! The Winter Dance Celebration features performances by our ballet\, modern\, jazz\, hip-hop and tap technique students as well student choreographed pieces from our Capstone Composition class. SUMMARY:Lyceum Luncheon Brown Bag Speaker Series - Peter Cultice on 'The Founding of the Ohio Anti-Slavery Society in April 1835'
DESCRIPTION:The Southeast Ohio History Center is hosting its Lyceum Luncheon Brown Bag Speaker Series at noon on Thursday\, December 12th.  Peter Cultice\, President of the Muskingum County History since 2018\, will be speaking about The Founding of the Ohio Anti-Slavery Society in April\, 1835. \nCultice practiced law in Southeast Ohio for 30 years and serves as a Magistrate in the Juvenile and Probate courts in Guernsey County. His love of history stemmed from growing up in Zanesville and graduating with a degree in history from Emory University in Atlanta\, Georgia. \nThe Ohio Anti-Slavery Society began at the Stone Academy in Putnam\, across the Muskingum River from Zanesville decades before the outbreak of the American Civil War. Cultice has spoken on this topic at the National Park Service Underground Railroad Conference in Niagara Falls\, and in Mariettam Gallipolis\, Cambridge and Belmont County. \nThe Southeast Ohio History Center is located at 24 West State Street and offers limited parking in the rear off North Congress Street. DESCRIPTION:The Brass Band of the Tri-State\, under the direction of Dr. Michael Stroeher\, who is also Professor of Low Brass at Marshall University\, will present its annual free Christmas concert on Tuesday\, December 10\, 2024\, at 7:30 p.m. in the Smith Music Hall Recital Hall at Marshall. Works to be performed include Christmas Fanfare\, Only in sleep\, Christmas Variations\, In The Bleak Midwinter\, Medieval Christmas\, Carol Fantasy\, Christmas Song\, Winter Wonderland\, and Twelve Days. \nThe brass band performs a variety of music encompassing several genres and styles including traditional brass band music from England and North America\, original pieces arranged specifically for the band\, musicals\, marches\, orchestral transcriptions\, Salvation Army Band music\, and popular selections. In addition to the annual Christmas concert\, the band also performs a fall concert\, a spring concert\, and performs in Charleston\, WV for Symphony Sunday\, the annual fundraiser for the West Virginia Symphony\, on the first Sunday in June.
