DESCRIPTION:This year\, we’re teaming up with Raccoon Creek Outfitters and adding a new twist to Paddle for Polio Plus. We’ll meet at Raccoon Creek Outfitters headquarters and basecamp on U.S. Route 50 and enjoy a leisurely float and paddle down the infamous Raccoon Creek. We’ll celebrate with food\, entertainment\, and prizes back at basecamp. \nPaddle for Polio Plus is a unique fundraiser aimed to raise awareness and support for Rotary’s quest to completely eradicate polio from the world. The initiative is over 3 decades strong and Rotary’s goal is complete eradication. Only a few countries continue to report new polio cases. We’re almost there\, but the final push is more critical than ever. It is estimated that is will take about $1 Billion to finish the job. \nAthens Sunrise Rotary aims to raise $2000 at this event\, which will eventually vaccinate 3600 children thanks to a triple match by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. \nThe event is family-friendly and will feature music\, free food and tons of games and activities for the entire family! Children 12 and under are free with a ticketed adult.

DESCRIPTION:The Lyceum Luncheon Brown Bag Speaker Series presents a program on Education\, Abolition\, and Baseball: More History from Southeast Ohio by Peter Cultice on Thursday\, September 18th at noon at the Southeast Ohio History Center. \nCultice\, President of the Muskingum County History since 2018\, practiced law in Southeast Ohio for 30 years and serves as a Magistrate in the Juvenile and Probate courts in Guernsey County. His love of history stemmed from growing up in Zanesville and graduating with a degree in history from Emory University in Atlanta\, Georgia. \nCultice will share stories of interesting characters from Southeast Ohio such as Joshua McSimpson\, from Big Bottom in Morgan County and Charles Thomas of Zanesville. McSimpson wrote The Emancipation Car: Being an Original Composition of Anti-Slavery Ballads\, Composed Exclusively for the Underground Railroad.  Thomas\, from Zanesville\, inspired Branch Rickey to bring Jackie Robinson into Major League Baseball. Cultice will share more history of Southeast Ohio. \nThe History Center’s Lyceum Speaker Series is a brown bag luncheon scheduled for the third Thursdays of the month at 24 West State Street in Athens. \nDue to ongoing construction projects at the History Center\, parking is very limited\, and visitors should come early to find such accommodations for their vehicle which may be a block or more from the History Center. \nFor more information about this presentation or about the History Center call 740-593-2280 or visit www.southeastohiohistory.org. \n

DESCRIPTION:It’s playtime at The Nest!\n\nBreak the routine\, get out of the house and come let your little ones play in a fresh space while you get to talk with other grown-ups for awhile!\n\nCome and go as you please anytime during our open play hours.  Toys and activities are geared towards babies and toddlers but older siblings are welcome to come along.\n\nWhile you’re here\, peruse the lending library of books\, DVDs and even baby carriers free to borrow!\n\nTuesdays masks are optional\, while Thursdays are mask-only for those who prefer a “mask-on” environment.\n\nDisinfectant wipes are always available and we have a tub for toys that have been “mouthed” so they can be washed before future use.\n\nA changing table and toddler potty are available as well as a bottle warmer and fridge for storing formula/milk.

We’re running a standalone\, start-at-the-very-beginning class that’s FREE if you’ve never danced with us before ($5 otherwise). This is the perfect way to get your brain and body moving and meet new friends! Scottish Country Dance is a social dance form a bit like contra\, but with more footwork. The name of the game is fun! Start at the very beginning\, with no partner or experience necessary. If you can walk briskly\, you can dance! No registration required. Just show up\, solo or with a friend. Attire: Clothes you can move in. Sneakers or ghillies are great on your feet. Dresses\, kilts\, shorts\, or yoga pants are all perfect. Come dance with us!

DESCRIPTION:The Catholic Ladies of Columbia will host their annual Ice Cream Social Fundraiser on Saturday\, September 6\, 2025\, from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. in The Holy Family Center\, 75 Stewart Street\, Athens.  The ladies will be serving pulled pork and chicken salad sandwiches\, hot dogs/sauce\, baked beans\, coleslaw\, mac & cheese and chips. Premium Larry’s Dawg House ice cream and toppings plus home-baked pies\, brownies and sundae cookies will be available. \nCake walks will be held throughout the event. We will also have a fun chance auction\, 50/50 split the pot\, children’s grab bags and a bean bag toss for Beanie babies.  A free craft table for children will be provided. A Silent Auction featuring 15 specialty packages will be available for silent bids. We have 2 OSU vs UCLA football 50-yard line tickets\, autographed photo of Joe Burrow\, 4 OU Bobcat Football tickets\, 80 x 90 Scrappy Christmas Quilt\, Zoo tickets and so much more. \nEveryone is welcome.  Please come out to support the CLC and enjoy an afternoon of fun\, food and friendship.

DESCRIPTION:Something suspicious is happening on the rails in the Hocking Valley — and you might just get swept into the mystery before you even board the train. \nFor one day only\, on Saturday\, Sept. 6\, passengers on the 1 p.m. Hocking Valley Scenic Railway ride will be welcomed at the Nelsonville depot by live characters from ABC Players’ upcoming production of Agatha Christie’s “Murder on the Orient Express.” \nPlease note: The characters will not be aboard the train. The interactive experience takes place only at the depot\, prior to departure. \nStarting at noon\, guests will have the chance to meet the famous detective Hercule Poirot and a host of suspicious personalities — each with secrets to hide and possibly a motive to kill. Visitors are encouraged to interact with the characters\, snap photos\, and enjoy this rare collaboration between two of Nelsonville’s most beloved cultural institutions. \nThe event precedes the 1 p.m. East Logan Round Trip\, a family-friendly\, 22-mile journey that lasts approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. The vintage train winds along a 156-year-old route\, offering scenic views of the Hocking River\, glimpses of Lock No. 19 from the old Hocking Canal\, and local industry sites. \nAdapted by Ken Ludwig\, “Murder on the Orient Express” follows the brilliant detective Poirot as he solves a chilling murder aboard a glamorous train filled with secrets and suspects. Expect vintage costumes\, dramatic twists\, and edge-of-your-seat suspense. \nWhile the train ride itself remains character-free\, this special pre-boarding event offers a fun taste of mystery and theater – with a scenic twist.
